KYRK 106-5 "The Shark" flips to Christian Radio

This is a sad day for me, gentleman.

After a great run that started Oct 9, 2014, "The Shark" is no more. It seems longer than 2014, because throughout the majority of 2013, 106.5FM would play "Sunday at the Nineties," offering a lot of classic 90's Alternative songs the entire day on Sunday. On May 3, 2015, "The Shark" switched frequencies, from 106-5 to 94-7, but that was short-lived, as "The Shark" came back to 106-5 on July 22.

The alt-rock station that I hold close to my heart has flipped to a Christian musical format of some sort. I listened for about 30 minutes, and the station did not ID itself at the bottom of the hour (illegal), nor did it offer a moniker, it only claimed "106-5." It's hard to identify what type of Christian format the station will claim, as it played songs all over the map. Josh Turner's "Me and God" was heard, followed by a Gospel song that Shazam couldn't identify, followed by another Country inspired Christian song by an American Idol winner from Oklahoma called, "Temporary Home," followed by a Christian song from the 50s that Shazam could not identify. Stunting? That's a possibility.

The FM text that I saw on my car radio screen was "Nexus" followed by "Broadcast" and "Roadcast" (Roadcast was probably meant to be typed Broadcast but someone did not type the letter B). I also saw "Audio Stereo Processor mod.NSP01 in the text as well.

KYRK's reception is better than radio-locator gives it credit for, as you can hear KYRK terrestrially as far west as Los Angeles, TX (near Cotulla) and as far east as Victoria. To the south, I've heard KYRK's signal reach somewhere in between Falfurrias and Linn.

I will play 106 non-stop minutes of alternative to honor a station I will never forget, 106-5...The Shark.

Go ahead and file The Shark with The Edge (Dallas), The Tiger (Baton Rouge), 103-9 The X (Aggieland), 104-9 (Baton Rouge) The End (New Orleans), and all the other alternative stations that have fallen in recent years.

Must correct one thing: The FCC only requires stations to identify themselves by call letters and city of license on the hour or near the hour at a natural break in programming. No need to add all the various allowed things that can be inserted as no matter what, call letters and city of license must be given. Translators have different rules on IDing. So, to not ID the station at the bottom of the hour is not illegal whatsoever...there is no requirement to do so.

I appreciate the correction.

Interestingly, during World War II, according to what I have read, it was customary or possibly required to do a legal ID on the hour and half hour, something that went away after the war ended.

As for going half an hour with just music: not a good idea considering listening habits. You always want people to remember what you are and where you are so you can be found again.

I feel lost without "The Shark."

I feel like I've lost a pet...or my girlfriend broke up with me.

When was the last time your favorite radio station flipped and you felt sad?

I know that feeling. Stations change for several reasons: low ratings, poor sales, a client to lease the airtime or even somebody buying the frequency. In some instances it could be that ratings were okay and maybe sales were okay but a buyer came forward to lease or buy the station. You can make some decent profit when they buy the airtime and you no longer need that staff except someone to answer the phones. Unfortunately, markets like Corpus and Victoria are really tough in respect to sales. The fine line between making it and being successful versus the line where you are bleeding money is not a wide margin. Maybe somebody will pick up the format. For the number of stations in the market there should be several that are rather hungry for more than they have. Maybe someone will bite and take on The Shark.

I don't know what this is about. KYRK is on the air and broadcasting as usual 2-11-2017 at 9:00 PM.Signal does not seem to be a strong as usual. Still ID'ing as "The Shark"

Clouseau, you are correct. "The Shark" is indeed still on the air in Corpus Christi. I made a trip to the Body of Christ yesterday, and the station was indeed playing my favorite rock alternative from the 90s and today.

However, I believe there is a Pirate camping out on 106-5 in my hometown of Victoria, a city about 70 miles from the KYRK tower, and within fringe listening distance. It was coming in with same amount of "scratch" as KYRK would, so I figured KYRK flipped.

Victoria's 106-5 is not a translator, but it does offer (I forget what you guys call it when the station IDs itself via digital text on your car radio's screen HT or RT or something) texting on your car radio. It has not given itself a moniker, only IDs itself as 106-5. No call signs or COL. Nothing on fcc.org or radio-locator, so I'm assuming it's a pirate.

The FCC really needs to address this. It's a really powerful signal; if you're within the city limits of Victoria, and even a little outside, you will hear the pirate. It's signal is even better than Victoria's KITE-AM translator, K248CS.

So yeah, Victoria has a pirate. Let's go to work.

This is not a pirate station, guys ..
106.5 is KSEJ-LP, licensed to Victoria by "Ralph Salazar Victory Ministries" ..

Yeah when it was HT'ing or LP'ing or RN'ing (I forget what two-letter acronym you guys use when speaking about ID'ing via text on your radio screen), I figured a pirate wouldn't have that ability. I was holding out hope it was a pirate. I hate that 106-5 The Shark won't be "swimming in the waters of Victoria" anymore. It came in pretty clear in my car. There was some static, but it was listenable for me. It's dBu definitely wasn't 60, DavidEduardo, and the sales team for KYRK wasn't looking to put boots on the ground in Victoria, DavidEduardo, but for Alt-Rock lovers, the signal was strong enough to strain through it and enjoy.

When was the last time your favorite radio station flipped and you felt sad?

When 94.7 "The Rig" was replaced by the Shark

Luckily, 94.7 "Jalapeño Country" is an outstanding Texas Country station these days😃

What an interesting station that 106.5 is in Victoria. Have they added any ID messages or announcements?
