KYW 1060 Celebrating 50 years of all news

Back in 1965, KYw Switched from music to news. Is it a real improvment? Hhaha. No really, KYW is a pretty important station I'd say. Wasn't it one of the first to do all news?

WINS predated KYW's switch to all news by six months. They switched in April of 1965. Both stations have remained consistent over 50 years,WINS in particular. WINS is featuring short features celebrating their 50th anniversary. Barring any major news stories on the actual day of the switch April 19, I wonder if WINS will do some retrospective programming that day.

One possible answer ; one question :

For we DXers of the AM band, there * was * an all-news station in Chicago, but it would have been in the late 60's. We'd get them on Long Island when the frequency was otherwise clear -- WNUS 1390.

The question :
My first DX recall of 1060 in Philadelphia was when it used the calls WRCV. If memory serves, that would've been ~ 1863. Did they keep those calls until they went all-news -- and * then * became KYW at that point?
Or to put it another way, did 1060 ever play music with the calls KYW ?

Yes, from about June to September 1965. They kept NBC's old format until the all-news operation was ready to go.

(Of course, KYW had a previous run in Philly from the '30s to the '50s...but that gets complicated.)

The 50th anniversary of all news is not until September.

The WRCV (for RCa Victor, located in Camden) were dropped. RCA was NBC's parent company.

NBC returned to Cleveland and adopted the call letters WKYC. Before it was KYW, the Cleveland station was WTAM (and is once again).

The first all news station is generally recognized as WAVA, Arlington, VA (January, 1961). A few months after WAVA and prior to 1010

WINS flipping to all news from top 40, Gordon McLendon had also launched all news stations in Tijuana (Southern California) and Chicago.
