L.A./Riverside-San Bernardino Arbitron Radio Ratings: June 2012

Question for David Eduardo: I see that the Los Angeles stations are no longer subscribing to the Riverside-San Bernardino PPMs. I'm sure that makes a ton of fiscal sense for the L.A. stations.

The Riverside-San Bernardino stations benefit by not coming in second or third in their own format to an L.A. station. Works for them, too.

But what about the advertisers? We know the reality is that there's significant listening to Los Angeles signals in the I.E. Doesn't the blanket no-show of L.A. signals give the advertisers an incomplete picture of what's really being heard?

The advertising agencies and major advertisers who subscribe to Arbitron get all the numbers, including the subscribers and non-subscribers in the market and the out of market signals, too.

Most LA operators did not subscribe to the IE ratings since there is not much they can do to monetize them. Now that Arbitron does not report non-subscribers we can't see any of that in the publicly released data.

How times really have changed.

To see KSGN amongst the highly-rated in the IE is boggling.

I can remember when this station was licensed to what was then called La Sierra College in Riverside. They had a Sono-Mag automation system in the basement of a building in the rear of campus.

The station manager was a personable man named Lee McIntyre who started there when he was a student, and was General Manager when the station moved off campus. I don't know his present whereabouts, but he did an excellent job of leadership at the station which at various times had the call letters of KLLU, KEMR, KSDA, and KSGN.

Live broadcasts of Seventh Day Adventist church services from the campus churches at both La Sierra and Loma Linda University were longtime staples.

Perhaps their most memorable broadcast was the memorial service for Baby Faye, the infant who died after being given a baboon heart transplant at LLU in the 1980s.

Someone who worked there back in the day told me that most people on campus had no idea that the station was there.

Yep. Times change and life moves forward.

Nice jump (at least in these useless numbers) for KBIG. Those of us who have been talking on this board about how good the station has sounded of late must not be alone.

CHR KIIS FM is still sitting at No. 1 for another rating period. The people at Clear Channel must be jumping up and down as I type. Songs by Rihanna, LMFAO, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Drake, Pitbull makes up KIIS FM's playlists.

I find it funny how Power 106 has continuously gained cume but remained at a 4 share for the past three months. At least there's ONE station owned by Emmis that's doing consistent in the ratings. ;)

The main problem I have is with CBS Radio's handling of its AMP/NOW branding. If it's doing well in L.A. (and have been doing well since its launch), and it's gaining ground in Detroit (it has surpassed 9-5-5 in ratings for the first time gaining over a 4 share), why isn't it working in New York? You would think that, as well as CBS Radio programs some of its CHR stations, that it would find overall success in at least the top two markets it launched in. What gives? Is it the way the stations are programmed? Just a thought.

Might be that Clear Channel NYC has created a powerhouse with WHTZ and WKTU. WKTU is mostly a CHR sounding station compared to years ago when it had alot of Rhythmic gold. Not to mention WPLJ. Those stations are usually at the top of the ratings. Maybe WXRK gets no love because of the former KROCK format that left the air twice. Their jocks are not that exciting either. I had no idea Booker came from that station. I never listen to WXRK online so I cant judge its playlist. Does it have the same Rhythmic sound like KAMP?

I agree. KIIS has been, pretty much, the only game in town for mainstream CHR/Pop. KBIG/KYSR are programmed away from KIIS on purpose. KPWR does will playing lots of hip-hop.

In New York you have Z100, KTU, and 'PLJ all fighting for the same pie (pretty much, Z100 and 'KTU are slightly different demos). Add in a few nearby markets like Long Island's 106.1 BLI, and that leaves only a tiny slice left for 92.3 NOW.

But what else are they gonna do? Throw WFAN on FM?

They could consider relaunching Kiss FM for NYC. CBS radio has WBAV in Charlotte a well successful Urban AC. Although CBS cant use Kiss or the WRKS calls because YMF owns them with WBLS.

I take it you haven't been to LA lately. KYSR is now alternative, while KBIG is essentially Adult CHR and flanks KIIS rather than being programmed away from it.
