Also, local and reliable sources told this newspaper that SBS is investigating the veracity of the numbers of El Mandril as number one, on complaints of possible fraud.

Huh How can somebody rig Nielsen Ratings

Huh How can somebody rig Nielsen Ratings

Stations that subscribe to Arbitron / Nielsen Audio ratings agree to the terms of the ratings company's "Ratings Distortion and Bias" policies.

The policies apply to employees of stations as well as the stations and their management.

Nielsen has a department that deals with ratings distortion.

Here's how it can happen:

A household where there are diaries or meters fails to disclose a "media affiliation" and one or more members of the household works for a station and writes down listning (diary) or listens (PPM) in an exaggerated form causing the station to increase in ratings.

Or it could be that a person related to a station "encourages" those who got diaries or meters to report or listen more.

Or the station, in the diary markets, promotes "write down that you listen to KZZZ all the time".

In the case of the diary, one household only affects one week out of a ratings period's 12 weeks. But in the PPM, a biased household or household member could influence ratings for up to two years.

Nielsen's rules even prohibit things like mentioning ratings and ratings methodology in social media.
