That should be "foreward" as reggaetón is the newest most current music.

And salsa is a dying genre, with little good new music and most of the stuff at least 20 years old. Merengue pretty much the same.

I guarantee you most of the salsa and merengue songs are being played during Alex Sensation's mixes to add to the party and dance atmosphere. The rest of the time people want the new, hip music.

And in the months of 2023 the ratings for that mix show have declined seriously. Off by about 40% compared to the 2022 average.

According to Wikipedia en Español:

Salsa was started in the early 60's.

Merengue was started in the early 70's.

Bachata was started in 1990 replacing Amargue for a long time.

Reggaeton was started in 2000.

The name "salsa" and what is today's "salsa" music began as an offshoot of things like the Boogalú and other older tropical rhythms in the very late 60's. If I were to put a date on it, I'd say 1967 was the benchmark year. That is what we considered to be the "start of salsa" when I launched Z-93 in San Juan, the worlds first all salsa radio format.
Merengue was started in the early 70's.
It's a derivitiive of Dominican folk music and goes back many decades prior to 1970.
Bachata was started in 1990 replacing Amargue for a long time.
Bachata crossed over in 1990 or so, but was in existence in El Cibao region of the Republic going back to maybe the 70's when it emerged from El Amargue as a progression, not a new thing.
Reggaeton was started in 2000.
There was an all reggaetón video TV channel in the late 80's in San Juan, run by Pichín Roman who had begun all-reggaetón on his FM station around 1985. The music is about 40 years old this year.

And, as usual, Wikepedia got it terribly wrong.

That's INCREDIBLY WRONG. La X has been playing more Merengue than Reggaeton recently despite it being a Hurban/Rhythmic mix. I hear Merengue Cibaeño/Merengue Típico all over La X nowadays.

Yeah. The only time I really hear Salsa and Merengue when it's not being played by Alex is when DJ Aneudy or DJ LeoNation are on.

Close, Amor plays a decent amount of softer Reggaeton too.
