Lack of REAL News Radio

It sucks that Memphis has no all news radio station or heck even half news station. AM 600 is a crock. they have "news updates" here and there but no real news format. I'm talking about a real news station with anchors and national and local news. The day the accused Lacross player spoke, all cable news stations carried it live, 600 has Flemming ranting. All news does well up north and in Atlanta, Charlotte...why not Memphis. FM even...

Just curious, what all news station does well in Atlanta? Charlotte?

Al lnews has been tried in this market. Not with local anchors and such but there was an am station that pretty much simulcast CNN. This was a few years ago. It went nowhere and was off the air within a few months. And leave Fleming alone....he'll get better when his voice changes.

I raised this on the board a year or so ago, as I pined for an all-news outlet like WBBM/Chicago or WINS/NYC or even KRLD/Dallas, but the prevailing sentiment is that A) it's too small a market, B) it would lose money because of the overhead needed to run it right and C) this market wouldn't listen to it anyway.I still would like to see it happen, especially if CBS holds on to the stations here..

1) All News stations only work in maybe the top 7-8 markets. Atlanta and Charlotte do not have all news stations. Their morning shows may be all news, but that is it. Boortz, Howard, Hannity, Savage, Jason Lewis, etc. are talk, not news.2) sjs is right, they cost a ton of money and for it to work, you have to have enough population to bring a huge cume. Face it, with the ethnic mix in this market, it really is smaller than market 49 for an all news station. It could never be financially successful in this market.3) Talk and news in general do A LOT better in the north. talk and news in the south truly struggles. Sure many will say WSB does well but look at the entire market talk ratings. Market to market, the south can't match northern markets in this format. The pace and desire to be in touch is much greater up north.4) How many people in memphis really care to hear the lacrosse player speak on the radio? Cable news stations need to carry that stuff for image and content. In memphis, who cares? Granted wrec leave a lot to be desired when it comes to news. They miss stories, give wrong details, don't cover much but in all honesty, an all news can't work in this market. At this point I would just take a station that does news updates well here in Memphis.

You make some very valid points. WREC does not do local news as far as i'm concerned and that's sad. when there's decent breaking news they could at least simulcast Ch. 24. As far as Duke, that was one example but i do believe there are people who care about national news. couldn't someone just simulcast Fox News Channel? Maybe on HD? News is what would make me get Satellite.

> News is what would make me get Satellite. Then, get satellite. I can't speak for XM, as I don't subscribe to that. But, Sirius has several news choices, including, but not limited to, FoxNews, CNN, BBC World Service, etc.I am sure XM has similar choices, though.DE
