How effective is HD2 going to be on those rimshots like kfnk/knbq??

Some say their effective coverage is far less than the analog.

The primary contours are exactly the same as their analog counterparts. Now all someone needs to do is make an HD receiver that people can afford, and provide a reason for people to actually want to buy it.

That's the game plan CBS, Clear Channel and Entercom is counting on, hopefully to help the companies push the expansion of HD radio into the buying public. And from the way it looks, its already making headlines.

Headline: HD Receiver's ordered in June, still on back order! When the ship comes in from Taiwan, maybe someone beside Radio Engineers will hear it!

Magnolia is also selling HD radios too.

Does anyone know much about this?

(a) Are the side channels programmed by the chain and distributed locally (following the satellite model) or are these generally locally done?

(b) Are they selling time on these

(c) If run locally, are they running from full-blown automation system or more of a desktop/closet scenario

(d) Personality presence of any kind or just sweepers?

(e) How is ARB gonna treat these? Separate entities to the main channel?

Makes sense to me to do the national thing and let your "affiliates" carry the mix and insert their own branding, etc. (same model Westwood One, ABC Networks and everyone elses uses for automated programming...). Not sure I see a business upside yet (besides the marketing/call letter awareness to the primary station)

Lots of ink this week as folks ramp up -- but I'm not sure there is a MARKET for this. Like almost every other radio-related initiative ... I am concerned it's very likely too little too late. By the time everyone finished urinating on each other about AM Stereo standards, the resounding "market choice" was "WHO CARES".
