Lady Antebellum drops "Antebellum" from band name due to slavery connotations

Here's a question: The past hits were done as "Lady Antebellum" and not "Lady A". Will everyone, including radio, change those recorded by the original name to the new one even though they were not released under the new name.

Or is this sort of like John Mellencamp > Johnny Cougar > John Cougar > John Cougar Mellencamp to John Mellencamp?

Mellencamp had the "Cougar" name forced on him by the record label. He has stated that never wanted to use it, but reluctantly went along. It shouldn't be that difficult for Radio announcers/programmers to use the name the artist wants.

If they play a Mellencamp song from his earlier days, it's okay not to say "Cougar". I remember when Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. Now, that's a bit more tricky. The Artist Formerly Known as Prince...

I heard this morning that a blues singer calls herself Lady A. The band had applied for the trademark five years ago but the blues singer has used the name for 20 years. Naturally, the band is suing.

Apparently they talked it over for a few weeks, and this is what they decided:

You use the name vchimpanzee. Have you trademarked the name? Have you registered a domain with that name? Have you recorded any music under that name? No? Neither has the blues singer. We'll see what a judge says. Obviously not the best PR.

I don't know what has been in their drinking cups these days, but they are now suing that lady.

God bless you and her and them always!!!

Holly

P.S. I wrote to them at their Twitter page asking them if they ever thought about changing their named to Lady Anti Bellum. :) :) :)

Anita White has released 9 albums as Lady A, the first in 2010.

I didn't even expect to be using the name all these years later. One typo in one email to congratulate the radio station's music director on a career that should lead to appearances on the late night shows that featured intelligent animals, but I needed a name for an email address that wasn't my real name. And every time I would join a web site I used it, not realizing I would still be a member of said site 20 years later.
