Laguna Beach gets a real radio station at 93.5 FM (LP)

KDAY is 4200 watts which will wipe out this KX guy everywhere past Coast Highway. And anyway where is the other part of his call letters. Does the FCC now issue two letter calls for Low Power FMs like "KX""?

The only thing close to the Laguna Beach area for an FM listing on the FCC database is the following. I wonder if this is it, even though the article makes no mention of a church:

Tyler Russell is a former KCLB AOR night jock in the Palm Springs market. Before his departure he was transfered to the company's hot ac KKUU-HD2, which is carried on a 250 watt translator on 103.9. It is interesting to note the person who wrote the newspaper article remembered the long defunct KTED 1520 in Laguna Beach.
 
So not trying to belabor the point, but just out of curiosity, why would the FCC database show the following CP for Laguna Niguel and not Laguna Beach? Why would the FCC allow two low power FMs so close together on the same frequency if this is not Tyler Russell's station ? And why does the FCC list nothing for Laguna Beach. (My own guess is that this is the same station and that Tyler Russell found out that the church was not using the license and asked if he could use it instead and furthermore got the antenna site relocated to serve Laguna Beach). I guess I am being just to technical and picky here, but I believe this is actually an old granted license being "borrowed" by someone else and NOT in fact a brand new radio station as Mr. Russell is telling the story. Nonetheless, I wish him all the best and hope to be able to tune in and become one of his listeners in October.

The reporter who wrote the story, Claudia Koerner, contacted Gary Lycan and myself. I declined to be interviewed about the low-power FM station in Laguna Beach, but gave the reporter the information about Laguna Beach once having its own AM radio broadcast station, KTED-1520 between late-1949 and 1951, before it went off the air for good. She mentioned KTED in the story, but did not give me credit as the sourcde of the information.

Pete Smith, who was a longtime on and off DJ at KMPC-710 and several other L.A. stations, Music of Your Life, etc., worked at KTED in Laguna while he was in high school in Newport Beach and also working p/t at KVOE-1480 (later KWIZ) in Santa Ana.

I too wish the young man all the best with his station, which will be tough as only a 100-watt non-commercial FM in a forest of
commercial broadcasters.

There are a number LPFMs out there that do well in their communities. The concept unknown by most rim shot FMs is an alien one, it is called "being local". Any LPFM operator, and I know a few, will tell you that it is tough to be non-commercial and local. However, as non-comms, the rules for underwriting do apply.
