Last night's Wheel of Fortune - most amazing puzzle solve in show history?

Three words. 12 letters. None of them, except a free "N" and an "E" (RSTLNE) on the board -- even after choosing 3 consonants and a vowel. What happens next is a historical moment on the syndicated version of this long-time game show. I was shocked when I saw it last night. Just look at the video. :)

Not dumb luck. He explained that he used the letter board the TV audience doesn't see (letters available) to try to make worrds that fit. He was throwing anything out there and hit on the right combo in time. Good for him, it was one heck of a win.

That could have happened before, except that the point of Wheel of Fortune is to delay guessing in order to spin the wheel more often to win more prize money. I'll wager many prior contestants could have accomplished similar feats, but they wanted more spins to boost their prize money.

But this was the bonus round where the wheel isn't used.

Exactly. Dumb luck.

That explains it then. I haven't watched Wheel of Fortune in years. I didn't know it had changed. In fact, the reason I stopped watching was that it was too boring watching people keep on spinning when everyone watching had solved the puzzle already.

The reason why we solve the puzzle earlier than the contestants is probably one of 3 reasons.
1. To add commercial time.
2. To get as much money as possible by calling letters that WE know are up there (that is why the $1000 Express has replaced Jackpot, for people to call every letter that is up there and get the dough)
3. Stage Fright. Say the wrong letter and you may lose the round, let alone solving the puzzle wrong due to all the cameras, and being fed to 150+ TV stations with millions of viewers...
