Last person to receive pension from Civil War, $73.13 monthly, dies at age 90

Couple of points to consider:
--In the poverty ridden post-Civil War South, a number of women married men much older than themselves to get pension money.
--Many of the Confederate service claims were based on hearsay more than real evidence. Much of the Confederate Service records were destroyed in the burning of Richmond at the end of the war, and many states were more interested in giving the "Lost Cause" claimants money than following facts. For example, the last two alleged Confederate veterans, Walter Williams and John Salling, were shown to have never served at all.
