Latest sports station to flip to FM is 1310AM in Norfolk, replacing "Star 94.1."

Latest sports station to flip to FM is 1310AM in Norfolk, replacing "Star 94.1."

From the www.radio-info.com news page:

Max Media’s black gospel “Star” WXEZ, Yorktown, VA will be trading places with sister WGH-AM (1310). The Daily Press says the exchange of formats will occur on October 5, giving the sports franchise wider coverage than the AM’s 20-kw daytime/5-kw nighttime signal. WXEZ is a full Class B FM. It appears the entire current ESPN 1310 lineup will transfer to FM, including PD Tony Mercurio’s afternoon show. The gospel format that will now be on 1310 will share time with Norfolk Admirals hockey and James Madison University sports.

Pretty shameful when you realize WXEZ is Max Media's most highly rated station in HR. Yeah, throw those African American listeners under the train...

Yeah, I'm not quite understanding this one either.

This Was A stupid Move by Max Media. Look at the Ratings for the Game, The LOWEST in the market. I expect this will flip to something else in at least 3 months. I would love to see Max try Rock again.

Makes no sense. This station even showed in the Richmond book. Might prove an advantage to 104.7 in Central Virginia. Central Virginia has large African-American population and no major league team in Richmond or Tidewater. I thought Dick Lamb and Co. were smarter than this as most of their stations hold their own against corporate giants. Of course they let a major talent slip away from Beach 104.

Chances are there will be a major league team of some kind coming to Hampton Roads ( Tidewater ) within the next 5 to 10 years tops, yeah even though in the past I had believed otherwise. Afterall the NBA not that long ago, even they admitted they are/were interested in Norfolk plus had it not been for Washington DC, chances are Virginia ( Norfolk or Fairfax County ) would had been the home of the Montreal Expos so perhaps ( and I am only taking a guess here ) Max Media is taking at least some of this into consideration about putting a sports format on FM in that region. Looking into the future maybe?

Re: Latest sports station to flip to FM is 1310AM in Norfolk, replacing "Star 94.1."

But still that is then, isn't Star 94.1 one of the Top 5 stations in Hampton Roads ?

And music on the FM sounds better than on AM. AM is great for talk radio, and 1021 the Game should not even be a factor considering there ratings are low and do no cover as much ground as 1310AM.

The bottom line is whether or not they'll make more $$$ with Sports on the better signal. Gospel, historically, has not been the easiest format to sell.

Just for a conversation starter, I also wonder whether there was some pressure or rumor bantied about that ESPN would consider moving to the Game if Max Media wouldn't make an FM Sports-formatted.

Thoughts?

Pressure or not, Max media needs to expand that station and update the website. No "listen live" link online. Only pics of Tony...Mostly of him from the 70's.

What they need to do is bring in a fresh live and local (local being the key word) show to follow Tony.

A nice facelift and that station could kick ass!

The Stations Switched at midnight Tuesday Morning. I'll have audio soon from both stations.

Re: Latest sports station to flip to FM is 1310AM in Norfolk, replacing "Star 94.1."

Also, FYI: Sports radio is arguably one of the easiest formats to sell...it attracts a pretty valuable demographic and they listen for a good while! Not to mention pretty low overhead as well...

Makes me think of Columbia, SC where they recently moved in an FM and put a sports station on it. Within a few months, it was billing in the top 3...and the station wasn't breaking a 5 share!

Still, not a smart move IMO to put a well-established FM music format on AM. Somebody will pick it up on FM eventually.
