Laws that Govern winning prizes on local radio?

I just wanted to know why for example.

If I won 4 tickets to see Maroon 5 from KGGI.
Over the phone.
And I lived down in LA. Why i would not qualify to win those tickets. I'm over 18. But I don't live locally in KGGI'S. Listening area
Is it federal or state law that governess this? And why?

Nope. There are laws governing certain aspects of the contest to keep it from crossing over into gambling and to avoid cheating. But living in the local listening area is simply the station's policy. The point behind contests is to promote the station within its listening area.

So all this time I couldn't have won the House KCBQ gave away? We gave away a Cow at Radio Marti but had no way to deliver it. Everyone was eligible!

I know you're joking. But so we don't confuse the original poster, it's a matter of station policy. I don't remember the location requirements in old contests. Of course, we didn't have the net then either. If you were vacationing in San Diego and just happened to be the right caller, you probably won in those days.

No how can you joke about a Cow? I know at KSURF we gave away a Brand New 1986 Volkswagen Fox & in 1988 we gave away a 1988 Corvette. Specific Contest rules were never disclosed, you just needed to keep a hand on the Car. Seems contest rules these days have become quite corporate?

If specific contest rules were never disclosed, then KSURF was in violation of the FCC rules on contesting. A general set of rules and/or rules specific to each individual contest had to be broadcast on the air at least once a day (stations usually burned them off in overnights because they were long and dry) and printed copies of the rules needed to be available at the station's business office at no charge. That requirement goes back well before '86....I want to say the mid-late 70s.

Yep. Just as many stations restrict eligibility by age and restrict it to those who are not station employees, their families and the station ad agency or other suppliers.

Policy might even be, on a student oriented contest, to restrict winners to those with student ID from a local school or college. It's really very open as long as there is disclosure.

Renda Broadcasting airs a Thousand Dollar Thursday contest on its 18 stations. When the contest is announced, listeners are told, "Be the 60th nationwide caller at 888-725-2345 to win $1,000 cash." Callers from anywhere in the US can try to win, but the cash will be awarded only to someone living in the TSA (Total Survey Area) of one of the 18 stations.
