Layoffs hitting CBS O&O's in Sacramento, Denver... any in LA?

Big layoffs at KPIX in San Francisco today. Half the news room is gone-including two big name newscasters there.

Anchors Harold Greene and Ann Martin got it. They'll be gone when their contracts expire on June 1st.

Also gone: Reporters Jaime Garza, Jennifer Sabih, and 2 more whose names escape me at the moment.

I'm not an insider, but I think that may be a bit of an exageration. There were 14 layoffs at the station, including the newsroom. Included were weekend and fill-in sports anchor Rick Quan, and veteran reporters Manuel Ramos, Bill Schechner, Tony Russomanno, and John Lobertini.

They are experienced and exceptional reporters, so I'm not trying to minimize their loss, but calling them "big names" is a bit of a stretch. Schechner was co-anchor on one of the late night network newscasts that the Big 3 tried in the 1980s - I believe it was CBS Overnight, but my memory may be off on that.

It's hard to imagine that these reporters won't be picked up by the other TV news operations in the Bay Area, as slots open up.

Close, it was NBC Overnight. Co-anchored along with Linda Ellerbee. I liked it. The format was great and relaxing for that time slot. A little looser than ABC World News Now.

Does KPIX now have the smallest newsroom in the Bay Area?

Last night Don Knapp had three stories filed and a live shot on the 6pm newscast. I think the work load has doubled for the reporters. Or are they overworking him so that he just quits on his own?
