Legendary Dave O'Gara to fill in at Worcester's Pike

At the 7:25am newsbreak with Adam Webster this morning, Bruce Palmer mentioned that Dave O'Gara (from Oldies 98-9, also the home of Adam Webster) was in the studio and that Dave would be filling in for him the rest of the week. That's fantastic. Rarely do I get to listen to Oldies 98-9 (the signal doesn't reach very far) and I'm nowhere near the signal (or a computer) when Dave is on his normal shift (9am to 4ish).

It will be good to hear him and I would think it would give Dave some exposure to new and former listeners who, quite honestly, don't even know he's still on the air. Speaking of which, this is Dave's 40th year in radio. Quite the achievement.

The Pike morning show lasts until 10am. Dave normally starts his 98-9 shift at 9am. What will be interesting is if he is on both at the same time during that hour and if both are live or if he VT's the first hour of 98-9 (or the last hour of The Pike). Or does both live between songs and commercials. Adam Webster mentioned that he (Adam) is off tomorrow so Dave may be alone tomorrow morning unless they bring in someone to do the news updates live.

O'Gara has a full time job outside of radio and ALWAYS Voice tracks his weekday 98.9 shift. Always has for as many years as I can remember. (He goes in there early in the morning to do it - so doing the morning show won't be that big of a deal for him.

The only shift he does live is the Saturday shift on 98.9.

I heard that this morning, too. I've heard Dave pop his head into the Pike studio in the morning before, and all three seemed pretty comfortable with each other. Sounds like they enjoy working together.

Great decision to put Dave on for the Pike fill-in..he's among the best. Real old school.
Which makes him a good vacation sub for Cruisin Bruce, who also seems pretty old school (though a bit younger than Dave). I've liked listening to Bruce for years in Worcester and Providence before that..and have always wondered how he never made the jump to Boston.

I listen to the Pike most mornings and like the chemistry between Palmer and Webster. When Bruce is off and they fill-in with Frank Foley (former WXLO), frankly I don't like it near as much. Foley's a little too off the wall for me sometimes. Good luck on the fill-ins, Dave !

He did weekends for a little while and other fill-ins on WODS 103.3 a few years ago. Since then, even many longtime regulars were let go from 103.3 (and other Boston stations where he might have fit formatically).

Dave O sounds fantastic and brings back memories of listening to him and Phillip James Lagious (newsguy) on the original WORC-AM around 25 or 30 years ago. Sorry to date you, Dave. ;D

I'm guessing Dave is live because he's given some timechecks and has last night's sports scores. He'll be sitting in for Bruce Palmer today, Wed, Thursday, and Monday (I'm guessing not the holiday on Friday but maybe so). Palmer returns next Tuesday. For the 3 or 4 traffic reports I've heard, he's had no interaction whatsoever with traffic reporter Amy and one would assume traffic reports are live or fairly live. Bruce occasionally does interact with Amy.

JD, from WXLO, has the pretaped news updates (Adam Webster has the day off) and it sounds like the same report each time which, by the way, sounds alot longer and more comprehensive than any update I've ever heard from Adam.

And, listening briefly to Oldies 98-9, I've heard no one holding down the morning show there so I guess when Adam has the day off, it's a ghost town in that studio.

So what thoughts and observations do you radio people have?

And, wouldn't you know, just as I said that, Dave thanked Amy on her final traffic report moments ago for helping things run so smoothly this morning.

I'm wrong again. I guess I caught 98-9 at the wrong time earlier. I just heard Frank Foley doing the (taped?) 8:50 news update and heard JD signing off from the morning show. WXLO's Jen Carter does (or used to do) 98-9's taped news updates. I'm guessing she is on vaca this week?

Off to work. Hopefully, I'm done being wrong today. ;D

Well, since I'm apparently just talking to myself on this thread, I'll finish things out here and let myself know that Dave O actually signed off at The Pike each morning at 9am and then switched to his own show on 98-9. Whether he was live or tape on 98-9, I dunno. He SOUNDED live :-\ but since someone said he has an outside job, then perhaps not. And he and Adam Webster sounded great together on Pike's newsbreaks.

'Dave O on the radio' has one more Pike show Monday morning (no show on tomorrow's holiday) before Cruisin Bruce returns Tuesday morning.

Thanks for the running commentary, WMC ;D

I've had some serious computer downtime the last week or so and hadn't been able to respond.
Cruisin Bruce was back this morning..although Adam was still MIA with Mark Vough (sp ?) doing what sounded like pre-taped news updates.

Slowly, things return to normal after the holidays in Worcester radio-land.

That's Mark Veau and he has the 3pm-7pm shift at Oldies 98-9. Definitely pretaped and sounded like laryngitis as well. I'm only guessing (because I haven't checked) that Mark may be filling in for Adam this week on Adam's show as well unless maybe JD (from WXLO) is doing it as she did one day last week.

Here's Mark bio from 98-9's website:

Sad to say that, according to what Mark Veau said on air Monday, Adam Webster is off this week because his dad died.
