Legendary South Arkansas/North Louisiana broadcaster passes away

Long-time Monroe, LA. broadcast station owner James A. Noe, Jr. passed away at his home in New Orleans Sunday. Noe was the owner of KNOE-540 AM, KNOE-FM 101.9 and KNOE-TV Channel 8 in Monroe, all of which cover parts of South Arkansas. Noe's father, James A. Noe, Sr., started the stations and was a former governor of Louisiana. Noe, Sr. also started a station that many will remember, WNOE-1060 AM in New Orleans, which was later sold. K-N-O-E is a fixture in Monroe area broadcasting, with a most unusual looking broadcasting building located on Oliver Rd. in Monroe. Listen or watch any of the stations' legal I.D.'s and you would hear: "This is KNOE, Monroe - a James A. Noe station." KNOE remains one of only a handful of AM-FM-TV combos still in existance that all use the same call letters, are locally owned and controled, and are owned by the same family which origanally put them on air.

If I am not mistaken, James A. Noe Jr. was also the brother-in-law of legendary radio station owner Gordon McLendon who of course had KLIF and the chain of McClendon stations.

That's correct his sister was married to Gordon. She passed away several years ago. I remember back in the late 60's when I worked there, they would have coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. Everyone would leave their posts and go to the break room for coffee and donuts. And of course, Gov Noe would drive up for those breaks in his GTO Judge. There were pictures on the hallways of all the present day and past politicos with the Gov. On Christmas eve, Governor Noe would drop by and give everyone fruit cake and pecans for gits. Lot of great talent passed those doors; Bill Tanner, Jay Marks, Bill Huntley, Ron Jones. the GM's name was Ollie Bales, for radio back then and it was a great place to work.
