For Jax, the odds are L&T remain as is on Planet but I suspect CC is caught between a rock and a hard place. When L&T left Rock 105 to head for Planet, I wondered how they would do on a station that targeted a much younger audience.
Apparently, for all the young men in various businesses where they controlled the radio listening, they tuned in to L&T knowing their music would follow in the 10 AM hour. Now, they have competition and a music choice in AM drive. And they are choosing the latter.
I wondered how an average 25 year old male could relate to these guys. This is not just typical of today but in my youth, it was rare for me to take advice from my Dad and adults in general. Given an independent streak we all have/had in our 20’s and the need to relate to those who really understand us, I get the feeling L&T are just out of place.
Planet has suffered some hits and really they have no one to blame but themselves. If CC decided to replace L&T with a music intensive program to better compete with X102.9, the adverse publicity could wind up hurting their brand even further.
It’s hard not to let personal feelings affect judgment. I always thought L&T were overrated and personally, I believe Planet would be better without them. But I would only make that move if they could be placed and promoted on a different venue in the market such as their sports station. But that’s probably a stretch putting such a high-profile team on AM. Probably another subject, but I never believed Jax was a sports RADIO town. No one is excactly setting the world on fire in the ratings and even moving to FM wouldn't matter much given what 1010 XL did once. But a talk/sports combo could have possibilities. We’ll have to see and for all I know, L&T could still be the best life support Planet has and getting rid of them would not be the smart move. CC has a lot to think about and it's not just this one station.
