Leykis' online show outdrawing Limbaugh and Hannity OTA in L.A.

...posted a few weeks back on The Tom Leykis Show's Faceboob page:

SoCal radio listeners!

How do we compare to some traditionally popular known talk radio shows?

Week of 4/10-16/2014

Rush Limbaugh (KEIB) 113,800 weekly cume
Sean Hannity (KEIB) 88,700 weekly cume
Tom Leykis (internet stream) 169,412 tune-ins (session starts)

You tell me. Is it working?

...Tom went on to respond that the vast majority of his site's hits are from Southern California...

Are the Leykis numbers localized strictly to LA, or is that a national figure? Didn't he just do some fill-in work in San Francisco?

Just a few days ago, Hannity was complaining he's not getting credit for his internet audience.

...the Leykis numbers are probably global in general, but Leykis (and, to a lesser extent, Danny Bonaduce) were the only huge draws left on KLSX when CBS blew it up. Leykis filled in for Gil Gross on KKSF as a personal favor to Gil. Hannity (and Chump Channel, for that matter) just can't get past the fact that their all-Fascists-all-the-time talk format is literally dying even faster than their audience is...

That may be, but you're not making an apples to apples comparison. These are two different methodologies, using two different platforms.

In the L.A. area even with good reception of 1150 it's just as easy to open the IHeart app and hear KEIB in near-FM quality, especially when the app is in the dash.

Do you honestly believe Leykis is telling the truth?

He is not lying.. he is just engaging in hyperbole and using non-compatible numbers to prove an unreal point

Radio does not sell based on cume but, rather, based on average audience size, so using circulation numbers is totally irrelevant.

As to the statement that "most of the connections are in Southern California, we have to understand that KEIB does not cover Southern California. It just covers a portion of LA County and a tad of Orange County. Southern California, which is everything from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border, is a vastly larger area that KEIB comes nowhere near covering. So this is a disingenuous statement.

And then there is the total deception in equating "session starts" with "weekly cume". It's an "apples and armadillos" comparison.

A person may be listen many times a week, and for many different small occasions during each day of that week but Nielsen will only count them once in weekly cume. Cume, in radio, is the number of different people who listen once of more times in a 7 day period.

"Session starts", particularly for a subscription based program, may mean that there are 20,000 people starting 8 different sessions... or 10,000 starting 16 different sessions. But it is somewhere beyond impossible that the session starts number quoted is based on 160,000 persons each listening only on one occasion per week. Based on normal streaming session length, I would guess that the real cume is in the 15,000 range.

So, the Leykis page's statements come somewhere between puffery and outright distortions of the truth.
