Lincoln Financial Group...Seems like we hardly knew you!

;D Raycom has done dumber things..Hogwood is one in my opinion.. None of this would be going on if my old buddy Charlie Crutchfield was alive!

There is a rumor while he was alive and in retirement that Mr. C was very disappointed in what had been done to his "Great Lady WBT".

He was in for the 70th anniversary when the format was largely what it is now. He didn't seemed too fussed about it. He was a big time cold warrior and created a series about the evils of communism.

And why would they want to do that? I know the name means something to people in radio, but has little meaning for listeners. And besides, the new owner would be more proud of their own name than of someone's old one.

Is there some reason a buyer couldn't change the name back to Jefferson-Pilot?

What good would that do the new owner? Honest question because I don't see how that would help me if I were to buy the group (which I'm not but I might if I had more money than I knew what to do with plus a little extra!).

Yes, When Lincoln Financial bought Jefferson, Pilot, they bought the name as well. Unless, Lincoln Financial was willing to give it up legally, I doubt we will ever see the name Jefferson Pilot again. Broadcasting was never the core business of Jefferson Pilot, and it definitely is not the core business of Lincoln Financial.

Where did you get that info from...I don't think Lincoln owns Jefferson Pilot..Show me something on that!... Can I still fly my heliocopter and use my name in the air "Jeff Pilot"...I think so!!

When Lincoln Financial acquired Jefferson Pilot, they acquired the name as well as is typical with mergers and acquisitions. It doesn't mean they couldn't surrender the name if they do not want it. For example, Piedmont Airlines still exists as a subsidiary of US Airways.

wncc is correct.

As for your ability to use the name "Jeff Pilot" it depends. If WBT at some point registered the name as a service mark in North Carolina, use of the name on the radio or TV would be controlled by Lincoln Financial. The service mark would be considered an asset of the radio stations and sold along with them.

If they didn't register it, you might get away with using it, but they would likely claim prior use and under the service mark laws of NC could likely prevent you from using it.

Something happened to the Jeff Pilot name a while back. I don't remember if it was bought by Metro, or retired by Lincoln Financial when they bought JP. What I do know is that even WBT couldn't use it, so I doubt you can fly around and say you're Jeff Pilot except to your passengers to amuse them. And then they better not be lawyers.

Might not be a good idea to threaten to sue me while they are in the air.."You get my Drift"? Jeff Pilot/BIGAPE

Hmm, I wouldn't be the one leaving the aircraft and the aircraft wouldn't be crashing! Jeff Pilot

I hate to tell you, but ask anyone in Charlotte which channel they recieve more clearly with an inside antenna and the answer will be 18 over 3. Probably the same in Richmond, 35 over 12, but I would guess 5 still beats 24 in Charleston. WBTV has SERIOUS reception issues in Charlotte. Still, I can see FOX being interested in WBTV but certainly not WWBT or WCSC---Charleston is a sub-100 market, after all, and Richmond is #61.

Wow you said it, Channel 3 has always suffered from signal problems. The new tall tower didn't help at all where I live. I have seen out of market signals come in better than WBTV. Besides in a couple of years most of the Charlotte TV stations (except for WTVI) will be on UHF anyway when all the analog signals are turned off.

CBS-18, Fox-3? It could happen but I don't think so.

The only rumblings I'm hearing are Entercom and Cox, but that's straight from Taylor on Radio-Info. If that's the case, I think it will be Entercom for Charlotte. Pure speculation on my part.
