Lite102.9-Best Of The 70's, 80's, 90's & Today

They quit using the national "premium choice" feed all the time. Somebody local is doing it. I see more older music and more conservative with the newer stuff. WMAG dropped it last week as well for more of a 70s/80s approach.

But they're still not "Lite", are they?

Consdering The Link is really a talk station, this may actually be bad news for some people. Especially since WKBC is supposedly still airing that talk show at night.

By your standards, vchimpanzee, no, they aren't "Lite." That is a mouthful of a slogan, one I don't like since we are in 2010 now.

Lite's recent music re-tooling, which has removed the Jordin Sparks, Rhianna, Adam Lambert, Lady GaGa, Livin' La Vida Loca type material has made them very similar to K104.7. They are more conservative now, playing around 3-4 70s and 3-4 80s an hour....Lite was always more contemporary than K, but now it looks like they are going head-on with K by having more of a gold lean.

Could this be another nail in K104.7's coffin, or am I overthinking?

Overthinking.... I think most people who listen to either station won't notice. It's just background music for the office cubical. Think McRadio.

Lite has a lot more going for them than K104.7, IMO. They have a better sound. Imaging and presentation is good, contemporary (if things haven't changed), the music is slightly better, just overall a more solid station. Plus they are the "heritage" AC. K sounds stale and effortless with a ton of turnover. I usually like CBS stations over CC, but in this case, I've gotta say, Lite sounds much better.

Actually 104.7 has been a Charlotte station and some form of A/C a lot longer than 102.9. As EZ-104 it has been A/C since the early '80's. I guess there was a time when the station went a little harder edged as Star 104.7 but that didn't last long.

102.9 didn't even have a Charlotte signal till the late '80's when it was moved from Hickory.

Good point you make. "Lite 102.9" in its present form started in 1993. 104.7 dates back longer but has had more changes.

I wonder if Lite would bring the retro themed weekends back since they're playing more 70s/80s music (even a few 60s, the typical) now. WMAG just started this. It would help attract some listeners in Charlotte that listened to 94.1 maybe.

There is a need in the Charlotte market for a good Classic Hits stations that plays some of the really greata late 60's tunes. WTHZ was 80 to 90 miles away and pulled 2 shares in the money demos. That should tell somebody something and we're seeing more and more of the "classic hits" stations grown across the country. The attempt of the new AM station, Z730, to crack the market is really a fine effort but feel they are way out of their league. What they need is somebody to guide them and help them get on track.

With the direction music is taking, i'm glad to see more stations wanting to play titles from the 70's, and some 80's, i do
agree Charlotte needs a good oldies station, 730 might make some head way, but this would be better on FM, the internet
helps, but maybe 106.1 should go back to this format.

I would have to go with choice: B.

Hmmm...seems to me Charlotte DID have a station like that. Wonder what ever happened to it ?

I really think most everybody that likes oldies or Classic Hits is trying to give Z730 a chance but there are lots of things that are "small market" and needs to be cleaned up. Hopefully they will get it right and make a splash in Charlotte.

as radio people, we hear the "small market" stuff--the average listener is only thrilled that oldies music is back on the air...so why not get behind this and support it? the kinks will work themselves out; and even big guys like cbs and cc have had major tech glitches, put unseasoned talent on the air to save money, and generally acted like they were "small market" in order to save a buck! i say we radio vets band together and support each other's efforts to put real radio back on the airwaves and boot the corporate machines out of the industry!

Go Liz! I agree on all points. You said it well.

Liz...first of all..I love you..really...and I love that this site offers the "real broadcasters" a place to vent and reminisce....
I was out last night with the radio girls done wrong...or some of us anyway (Ha ha) and we were JUST saying the same thing about supporting REAL talent....forget the glitches...CC and CBS STILL have glitches...this is why CBS went to SIX hour LIVE shifts BECAUSE of the audiovault glitches....
so I agree with the legendary Liz.

Valentine starts on Tuesday AM and LITE needs a board op to make it run....Valentine is good...it will give 104.7 a run for their money. I still think the AM show should be local though..Jen and Jim did ALOT for charity and you need localism for that. Another corporate oversight.

holly is my girl! i've held my tongue for way too long about how badly good folks and great talent have been treated by the evil empires! i believe this could be a turning point and local radio will once again be the norm...eventually, even those unseasoned newbies will get their feet wet and want to do real radio...
