Lite102.9-Best Of The 70's, 80's, 90's & Today

What saddens me about today's radio is how "out of touch" corporate radio is!, I am a staunch believer in "live and local"
radio, in North Carolina's largest broadcast market the listeners are being cheated by not having true "interactive" radio,
CBS Radio, Clear Channel and others don't have a clue on what people want, the technology might have changed, but the
people's connection to a "real broadcaster" should "never" have changed, the problem with today's philosiphy "it doesn't
work" and if corporate radio dissolved, this industry would be in better shape...

The ONLY way that radio will survive is being live and local. If we're once again live and local that will give us more opportunities to have fun, create some exciting station promotions, but most of all, give the listeners what they want. And isn't that what it always be about?

Actually 104.7 has been a Charlotte station and some form of A/C a lot longer than 102.9. As EZ-104 it has been A/C since the early '80's. I guess there was a time when the station went a little harder edged as Star 104.7 but that didn't last long.
It was not AC in the mid-90s. Star strted out a s Super sounds of the Seventies with the call letters WSSS. then they added the 80s. At one point they were playing Judas Priest. So, yeah, they were "a little harder edged". Of course, a similar station in Roanoke was playing Motley Crue. I don't think Star went quite that far.

102.9 didn't even have a Charlotte signal till the late '80's when it was moved from Hickory.
Maybe not, but Jeff Borden of The Charlotte Observer sure heard about them. WROQ had gone full-fledged top 40, Z-100 was also top 40, WBCY was hot AC, and WXRC was AC. People north of Charlotte were saying "Y-102.9" was the only good rock station in the area. They even had Dr. Demento, the syndicated host who discovered Weird Al Yankovic!

I place the blame for that completely on the FCC and Congress for dissolving the multiple ownership rule that used to be in effect:
7 AM
7 FM
7 TV

Increasing it some would not have hurt, but leaving it wide open to allow the mega corporations to have hundreds and thousands of stations is exactly what has ruined this business, and I don't know if we will ever get it back.

Just like when they removed the financial liquidity requirement for station ownership and how that has affected many stations in small markets.

At one time someone applying to build or buy a station had to prove to the FCC that they had enough capital reserves to build or buy, and also operate at a loss for 12 months. In the name of diversity, that was lowered to 9 months, then 6 months then 3 months then eliminated altogether if memory serves me correctly.

That change did not serve the cause of diversity very well, it only allowed a number of owners who had no reserves to buy or build stations which promptly went bankrupt!

Basing a program schedule off a computer program? That's one of the dumbest things I've heard. The computer doesn't make mistakes, the person programming it does. When is CBS going to wise up and just put K104 out of its misery?

I'm sure CBS is quite happy with K-104.7. Minimal cost and max profit. Why let Lite have the whole A/C pie? Just because YOU don't like the format. They don't seem to have any problem selling spots.

Oh and yes the Audiovault can do some nutty things. I know from experience! Call me old fashioned but I think there should always be at least one person at the station listening to what goes on the air.

There was a time when there was no less than 4 people on duty for an air shift, newsman, jock, board op, and transmitter engineer. Now owners cry when they have to put one person on at the station?
