Live in Austin but listen to San Antonio or Waco stations?

KNCT 91.3 out of Killeen is great listening for those us who followed the beautiful music here in Austin from KASE 101 to EZ 102 to AM 1370 before the format left town altogether.

And KXTN 107.5 in San Antonio is the mother church of Tejano radio and proudly carries the torch for this unique home-grown format with a big-budget presenation loaded with plenty of local personality.

I'm about 30 miles south of Austin, and listen to both Austin and San antonio FM, plus watch Austin // San antonio TV when I'm not on Direct TV.

;D Fred, Thank you for the KIND words my man! I get alot of calls during my show, 4p-9p Mon-Fri & Saturdays 7p-12a, from Tejano & Proud Listeners from Austin!

i was wondering why doesn't univision use 107.7 as a repeater station of kxtn or try to play the same music that's on kxtn.

I had the same thought since 107.7 is stronger in North Austin and 107.5 reaches south Austin.

PS-- 107.7's Hybrid Digital subchannel carries KXTN, but who has an HD radio except a few radio geeks?

I didn't know 107.7 was in HD, how does that effect advertizements?

Fred, you are so funny with your insistance on calling the brand 'HD Radio' - Hybrid Digital. According to Wikipedia - HD Radio, which originally stood for "Hybrid Digital", is the trademark for iBiquity's in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio technology used by AM and FM radio stations to transmit audio and data via a digital signal in conjunction with their analog signals.

So it really is okay to call it 'HD Radio'. But if you insist on 'Hybrid Digital', please remember - AM is also 'Amplitude Modulation' and FM is 'Frequency Modulation' ;D

You'd probably have to listen to most SA stations in Austin online. There's a CHR station that came in pretty well from SA to just south of Austin, and I finally lost it at Town Lake.

I stress the Hybrid Digital because so many HD radio stations have liners that say, "Stay tuned for more music in High Definition." I'm doing my part to make sure people know that the HD in HD Radio is very different from the HD in HDTV.

BTW-- Who do you think wrote the wiki entry deep sixing Hybrid Digital? The same people who want to bury the Hybrid Digital past. But it'll never be gone. It's in all the FCC filings Ibiquity turned in to make Hybrid Digital the U.S. broadcast standard.

I live in south Austin, but dislike Kiss FM for a couple of reasons, so I end up trying to pull in 97.5 from Waco or (now) 97.7 from San Antonio for my CHR fix.

Austinites tuning in to San Antonio stations is nothing new. During the 60's both KTSA and KONO had quite a few Austin listeners for both stations' Top 40 formats, as an alternative to the local KNOW. 550 and 860 were preset buttons in many cars. WOAI and (the then) KMAC and KBAT could also be found on many presets as well.

For you young 'uns... Back then car radios only had AM. But they were great radios. You could pick up stations from hundreds of miles away.

Certainly you gest, 97.5 is one of the lamest, most unfocused CHRs I have ever heard. Not that Kiss is all that great.

In parts of WillCo, US 105 from Killeen is pretty listenable. 1660 from Waco, which I believe is ESPN, isn't too bad either. 1010, also from Waco, has had a strong signal in most parts of the metro as long as I can remember. I've even caught it on a pocket radio near The Domain area.

Also, I am always surprised to see how well 720 from San Antonio performs. Beats a few of the Austin AMs.

Z92.3 and B106 in Killeen are not very good. I give credit to 92.3 for playing some new music before other radio stations, but overall, 92.3 is mainly boring. Steve Harvey in the mornings. Middays is hosted by a DJ who is voicetracked from Miami, FL. Afternoons is hosted by the only live DJ (Program Director too) on air that has been holding down the afternoon drive for more than 20 years. Evenings is also voicetracked by Mychal McGuire who used to have the #1 morning show in Killeen a long time ago. (before '03) Overnights and weekends are mostly jockless. B106 is bad due to having just 1 DJ and playing the same 15 songs over and over again which is nothing new. For instance, they called themselves "The Hip-Hop Station" but then play Beyonce's "Halo". Something not right with that picture.

Thanks to everyone who responded! I got some good info to add to my piece, which should run Sunday. All the best ...
