Local ads are not being shown on FOX's 4K feed on Xfinity in the Boston market

FOX is showing EVERY World Cup game in 4K with Xfinity

IMG_0684.jpg

If you punch in 806 WFXT ( Channel 25) you get a prompt if you have a
4K box that the game is available in 4K - press OK and it's done - BUT
you do not get the local commercials from WFXT.

They also did this during the MLB Playoffs but not for NFL games

Here is the issue - a company like Jordan's Furniture is buying time
on the World Cup but the commercials are not being seen by anyone with
a 4K TV.

Local ads are a big part of why the over-the-air networks have been
able to keep sports and in fact, 8 years ago FOX and COX swapped
stations in Boston and Oakland so FOX could sell time during the 49ers
games.

For the last 2 Olympics, Comcast offered a 4K feed BUT ads from WBTS (
NBC 10) were included.

The 4K universe is expanding and FOX apparently does not care about WFXT's local sales

This is a problem

It’s been rumored in other threads that WFXT may no longer be a Fox affiliate after its contract runs out.

Also of note - the 4K feed of World Cup games can be seen in the Fox Sports app with a TV provider login. Those don’t have local ads either. Maybe Fox doesn’t care about local ads being seen in local markets.

Also, Jordan’s Furniture buys ad time on NESN, so their ads are being seen across 6 New England states during Red Sox and Bruins games - not just in Boston!

For Bruins and Sox games, NESN sends out regional feeds. for commercial purposes. The way of telling which feed you are on is by watching the pregame and they do a local weather update

Boston they use WFXT, RI WJAR, CT FOX 61 etc

4K to broadcasters is still pretty new. Not sure how WFXT is getting the 4K signal (satellite or IP delivery) but that device and the device that sends the 4K/NextGen signal back out of the building to the ATSC-3 transmitter or Xfinity or both may be the only two 4K things in the building. In other words, the 4K signal isn't going through the usual air chain so commercials can't be inserted.
There is even the possibility that Xfinity is taking the 4K signal directly and putting it on channel 806 independently of WFXT. I'd love to hear from somebody with a 4K tv that is taking the off-air NextGen signal of WFXT.

So wait, NESN has ”hyper-local” feeds of their own signal? That sounds so wasteful! Why would they maintain multiple versions of their own signal when it’s never leaving New England?

Allows them to sell region-specific ads - proving useful for sports betting ads geared for RI and CT.

There is no "off-air NexGen signal of WFXT." Nobody has 3.0 on in Boston....

...quite yet.
