Local News/Weather dropins on national a.m. shows

Just curious on if a lot of the smaller markets have any local news at :25 and weather during the national weather reports.

Up here in Bangor, ME, WLBZ-2 (NBC) does both on weekdays and weekends although it originates at WCSH-6 in Portland. There really is NO Bangor news presence until 5 and 6 p.m.. on weekdays then back to Portland for the 11 p.m. newscast and it's Portland all the way on the weekend. :(

WABI-5 (CBS) does both dropins on weekdays but stays with the network on the weekends. WABI does however provide the most local coverage during the week with newscasts at 5 a.m., 12 noon, 6 and 11 p.m. and has a 6 and 11 newscast on weekends. :)

WVII-7 (ABC) provides NOTHING for the weather breaks weekdays or weekends. On the :25 newsbreak, geez, it depends I guess. Sometimes they have a break recorded the night before. Sometimes it's Bloomberg Business Brief and their AccuWeather guy. On the weekends, they stick with the net. Their local news presence shows up at 6 p.m. And then they PRE-RECORD their 10 p.m. Fox and 11 p.m. newscast shortly after.Weekends it's that wonderful show "Paid Programming" at 6 p.m. and at 11 p.m. it's again "Infomercial!" on Saturday and "Seinfeld" on Sunday.

What does your market look like?? ???

The only stations I've been aware of that don't do at least weekday morning drop-ins are stations completely lacking any news presence.

Growing up, in Evansville, IN (80s - 1995), all three of the network affiliates (at the time, WTVW-7 was ABC (now Fox), WFIE-14-NBC and WEHT-25 was CBS (now ABC)) provided drop-ins at :25 (I'm not aware if the networks offered the :55 drop-in back then, though they may have and these stations opted not to take it) even though none of these stations had morning (pre 7:00am) newscasts until 1993. WTVW would do a 6:55 drop-in over the last five minutes of "World News This Morning," however.

After the 1995 affiliate shake-up, WTVW expanded their morning newscast to fill the 7:00-9:00 slot once occupied by GMA. Their morning show has been cancelled and brought back and been on the brink of cancellation again ever since. WEVV-44, which had been the Fox station, became CBS. They had started a 9:00pm newscast in 1993, which expanded once they picked up CBS. They began doing the drop-ins during "CBS This Morning," as well as a morning newscast. Their news department was shuttered in 2000, and I do not know what they do during the morning program now. Both WFIE and WEHT have mornings programs and do drop-ins at :25 and :55 during the week only. WFIE attempted to launch a post-"Today" Saturday morning newscast a few years back, but it was cancelled and I do not think they do drop-ins on the weekend.

Here in N. Mississippi, WTVA-9-NBC in Tupelo does cut-ins during the first two-hours of "Today." They may do the third-hour as well, but I'm not sure. I'm am sure, though, that they don't do drop-ins during the fourth hour, since it isn't run until 1:30pm. Their only news presence on the weekends is the 6:00 and 10:00 Saturday and 10:00 Sunday.

WTVA also operates the ABC and Fox stations in the markets. WKDH-45-ABC provides no news coverage, though when WTVA breaks into programming they do so on all three signals. During Good Morning America, WTVA pre-records a weather drop-in, but stays with the network (which runs a full-screen headline crawl) at :25 and :55.

WCBI-4-CBS also provides drop-ins during "The Early Show" during the week, but not on the weekends. Like WTVA, their news presence is limited to the evening newscasts on Saturday and Sunday.

CBS 44 in Evansville has some out-of-town meteorologist doing a taped weather during the morning breaks (about 15 sec of weather, 5 sec Martha Steward Read, then a 10 sec Martha ID), and Danny Lipford for 2:00.

Every half hour for two hours :x

If I recall correctly, WGTU/WGTQ 29/8 in Northern Michigan has scrolling headlines during Good Morning America. They haven't had a news department since 1984, as they couldn't compete with WPBN/WTOM and WWTV/WWUP.

As far as I know, Clear Channel's WWTI/50 in Watertown, New York still has local updates during GMA, even though they no longer have local evening newscasts. Not sure about WUTR in Utica with respect to GMA.

What about The Daily Buzz? It airs on KWKB in eastern Iowa, but there are no local weather inserts on that show--at least not on KWKB. But what about other stations?

WESH airs local news and weather dropins on all editions of the Today show

WKMG airs local news and weather dropins on the weekday editions of The Early Show and nothing (stays with CBS) on the saturday edition of The Early Show. WKMG used to air dropins on the Saturday edition of The Early Show when they had weekend morning newscasts but when they were cancelled so were the news and weather dropins.

WFTV airs local news and weather dropins on the weekday and saturday versions of Good Morning America (they do not air the sunday version) .

Here in the Lansing/Jackson Market:
WILX (NBC) local news/weather breaks during the traditional 7-9 TODAY show and again during the delayed airing of the additional Today Show

they also air updates during Weekend Today

WLNS (CBS) News/weather segs during "THE EARLY SHOW" , none on weekends since Young cancelled the WLNS Sat/Sun morning news

WLAJ (ABC) no local news/weather drops

I'll add a couple of other markets.

Indianapolis, IN:
WISH, WRTV, and WTHR all do local inserts M-F. I don't think WRTV carries GMA on the weekends, but sometimes I like to sleep in. For a while, they produced their own morning show on Saturday. I know WISH doesn't carry the Saturday Early Show (they clear it on WNDY 23. I suspect they do inserts, but don't know for sure.). I'm not sure what WTHR does on weekends -- they do carry Weekend Today, but I haven't watched closely enough to know whether or not they have local inserts.

WXIN doesn't have a national show to go to; all local all the time.

Terre Haute, IN:
WTHI and WTWO both do local inserts M-F, and neither does on the weekend. The first newscasts of the weekend are at 6pm.

That comes from the Jackson, MS-based Weathervision, Inc., which produces short weathercasts for stations all over the country. I knew they were doing it for WEVV's co-channel WTSN, but not for the main station.

In Atlanta (market #8), all three stations (WSB, WXIA, and WGCL) do cut ins on their shows. (Except WGCL on weekends, although I haven't watched in a while).

WXIA produces an hour of local news on sister WATL during the first hour of the Today show (all 7 days a week), so the 25/55 cut-ins are simulcast on both stations.

Has WSB started carrying GMA/Weekend or are they still covering it up with local news?

Laredo's CBS affiliate, KVTV, also has no local dropins durings its morning programs. In fact, it has no local news and weather of any kind. They had a website, but that closed years ago. I'd be surprised if they even have local commercials or IDs.

WSB (and sister WSOC Charlotte) carries GMA Weekend on Saturdays 9-10, displacing one hour of local news. This happened the same time they both began carrying Jimmy Kimmel.
