Local Radio Reacts To Event (well some stations anyway)

For those show say local radio is dead - or corporate ownership is bad - please
explain two great examples last week of local radio stations (all Cox in this example)
reacting to signficant events.

Thursday - Michael Jackson dies and WAPE went into all-MJ mode with live talk between
DJ's and listeners...

It was live, local, and compelling!

The CC competitor - KISS FM - was voicetracked and no one cared to come in to update it.

Friday - Severe weather during rush hour - and WOKV goes live with tornado warnings, calls from listeners who can SEE the actual funnel,
their own staff in the field reporting on the waterspout approaching downtown - and an ALL-COX simulcast!

it was live, local, and compelling!

Didn't get a chance to hear the rest of the market- was too compelled by the WOKV coverage.

PP, your points are very well taken. As far as WOKV, they ARE so damn good and reliable. I have sung their praises a lot of times and I was driving in that mess during that bad weather and the info they provided was invaluable. Before all the bad weather I was at home watching Fox News and Cavuto. The coroner in the MJ case was going to speak at 4:30 and I was a little miffed that I was going to miss it as I had to head out. Even though it wound up resulting in no news, WOKV did simulcast Cavuto as well so they recognized the story to be an important one. Again, they are aces in my book.

As far as WAPE is concerned, thank you for the info. My posts can tend to get way too long when I get spun up which is often. I only assumed they would have done some special programming and I'm glad they did as our community needed to have that. Personally I have been let down by so many things here that I just assumed no one made the effort. I will be a stand up guy here and say sorry to that. I'm glad the Big APE rose to the occasion.

I did here MJ's show on WFKS the next day that I thought was pretty good. If what you say is correct, there is no excuse for them to be voice tracking during that critical time when MJ's death was announced. Thanks for grounding me! I'm not as bad as my bark.

Wow! That sounds compelling! Wish I'd heard it.
