Heck, 40 years ago the paper killed a downtown freeway plan.

I know this is somewhat off-topic, but I'd love to know more about this. Where exactly would this freeway have been located?

Where the I-10 freeway is now. The Republic didn't kill it so much as delay it for a generation. The freeway, on the books since 1960, was finally completed in 1990.

Dhett is correct, the location of the freeway is the same, but the design was really outtasight. There was actually support for this scheme, but once the Republic started editorializing against it, it was toast and I-10 wasn't completed till about 1990-91.

That really would have been a cool design with the green space.

And to think you long-term Phoenix area residents rail against the current owners of the Republic... :D

My company is pulling all paid banner ads from azcentral.com after the paywall is in effect. Apprently, they think that there will be about 10 people, maybe 12, who will pay to view azcentral.com! ;D

Channel 5 is also doing promos in heavy rotation about how their website is free. Think about it: Four TV stations (not counting 12), KTAR, KJZZ, KFYI, EV Tribune - all free. Why should anyone pay for azcentral?

I've been casually watching Channel 5's Noon news. Even their field reporters will mention "...to get more details, go to our free website CBS5AZ"

Has Fox 10 been mentioning their free website as well?

New Times tells how you can read everything at AZCentral for free...it is very easy...

My Fox10 viewing is limited to about an hour of their Morning Show weekdays but I cannot recall them changing their standard pitch to "to go to MyFoxPhoenix.com" for follow up on stories. The word "free" hasn't seemed to have been used........ yet.
