Looks like Sunny 99.1 is planning to play Christmas music this weekend

A quick browse through their Facebook page and I found this post:

Additionally, a listener asked in the comments how long this would last and the station replied "just for the weekend." It's not yet clear whether or not they will completely flip their format to Christmas or just sprinkle some in throughout the day.

I, for one, love Christmas music and will gladly tune in, but I'm curious what others think of this. I know last year some stations around the country did this to try and uplift their listeners during the pandemic. Perhaps the feedback was so positive that Sunny is deciding to give it a try?

Will be interested to hear how it works out and how it's accepted / reacted to by their listeners. I usually have the TV in my home office set to "Music Choice - Sounds of the Seasons" from Comcast/XFinity as that channel plays "The Pulse" during non-holiday periods which I like to listen to while working, but they also play patriotic music near Independence Day, Halloween themed music and parodies in October, and Christmas music during the holidays. The other day I switched it on only to hear their "Christmas In July" offering, which was their normal shuffle of Christmas music. While Thanksgiving and Christmas are usually my favorite times of year and hearing traditional Christmas music always puts me in the mood for it, I couldn't switch it off fast enough. It's really not what I want to hear in July when walking around in pit dripping temperatures during the height of summer.

Maybe they are changing the format.
I don't see why they would play Christmas music unless they were going to change. Way too early for Christmas music!

Will be interesting to see if they're doing it in anticipation of a flip, and I'm sure that's in the minds of their airstaff as well. That said, lots of stores and malls in this area are having "Christmas in July" sales and events, most likely to try and recoup their covid-related losses. Maybe the station just thought it'd be a fun idea, one never knows.

I personally only really listen to Christmas music on Christmas Eve and that is usually just All I Want For Christmas Is You. I don’t know why people would think they would flip Sunny to Christmas 24/7 considering how popular Sunny is. Who would listen to Christmas music in February?

A "Christmas in July" bit isn't anything new and this Sunday is the 25th. I'm banking there will be plenty of other AC and classic hits stations around the nation either peppering Christmas songs into their rotation this weekend, if not going all-out.

I couldn't see them doing this as a format change. As another pointed out, Sunny is far too popular, consistently coming in at or near the top of the monthly ratings. I suspect it is more for publicity. Sunny has done Christmas in July bits before, but they were much smaller and were done as a competition. They would tell you when one Christmas song would play during the day and you'd have to be the correct caller. That was it. This seems like it will be bigger than that. KEZ and KOST both did similar things last year I believe.

That's the one thing that will take some getting used to for me. Not sure how it's going to feel listening to Baby, It's Cold Outside in 95 degree heat. But I'm open to finding out!

I don't think anyone was thinking they (or any other station in their right mind) would move to a constant 24/7 365 Christmas format (thus, listeners wouldn't hear Christmas music in February), but in the market where I'm at, it's not uncommon for stations who plan to flip formats to abruptly interrupt their regular programming at Thanksgiving or sometime in December, play Christmas music until the holiday and then emerge with a new format and usually a new bank of on-air talent. That in mind, I think the question that was asked above was, will this be a weekend stunt with Christmas music, or would it be a weekend of holiday tunes, only to emerge with an adjusted format.

Based on what I'm seeing from a few posts, this may not be a station that needs "fixing" so maybe they've planned just a simple few days of "Christmas in July" music just for the fun of it, then back to their regularly scheduled programming.

How hard is it to voice some “Christmas in July” liners and program the automation to play Christmas songs all weekend? The station is automated on weekends anyway…

I hate that song.
At least play another version. To get this video to work you may have to go the link that says Watch on YouTube.
