Los Angeles July PPM Ratings & Rankings (L.A. Times story)

This is a stupid question that I'm sure they've dealt with. But here goes, what keeps a holder of the PPM from parking the unit in a closet with a radio tuned to whatever station they want to promote?

As I understand it the device registers inaudible markers transmitted with the programming so that the unit identifies which station is tuned on a receiver near the gadget. Is it more sophisticated than that as to detecting a person (or persons) also being in proximity?

Also does it register multiple listeners and count them or just the person to whom it is registered? I know it is stupid but I've never read any technical specs on them. I'm trusting that there are smarter people than me, in fact for the sake of the world I hope that they are out there somewhere.

The PPM has a motion detector. The patterns of motion determine if the detections are counted.

Motion determines if the meter is in-tab for each day. No motion, it does not count.

One meter, one person. But all the people in a household must participate. There are no partial households.

Go to www.arbitron.com and click the PPM button on the left. There is plenty of material about the meter.

So if your sitting at home, say in a recliner and listening to the radio, and you dont move around, it wont register as you listening? ???

Thanks David, you're the go to guy for all the info. If I had your brain I'd still be in radio somewhere instead of helping techno-phobes keep their "confusers" working, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Since I'm a person with a weird mind, who wants to subvert every new invention, what happens if I leave my radio tuned to polka music (I think Dick Sinclair is still around, Roger Sharp isn't) and put my cat, Mr. Scratchy, in the room will it register?

I grew up in the 50s and 60s a devoted fan of "MAD". ;D

Dear Alfred E. Newman:

Neither your cat nor your dog are eligible for people meters. They can't be surrogate humans, either, because our crafty software can tell the difference between the way a dog moves and the way most humans move. While there are dogs and cats that think they are human, there are very few humans that can move like our four legged friends, although we are acquainted with a number of humans who are dumber than the average Fido or Missy.

Sincerely,
Arbitron

Id say 'get your fat ass off the recliner and go do somthing'.

even sitting in a recliner you move. breathing, adjusting your sitting position, scratching your ass. you dont need to be doing high impact cardio kickboxing in order for the motion sensor to work.

KPWR OUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Guess people were right PPM is NOT Hip Hop and R&B friendly

No, it's not Power 106 friendly. In Houston, #1 is The Box.

Maybe KPWR should take a cue from WRDW/Philadelphia, where "Hits & Hip-Hop" is doing wonders for that station in the Philly PPMs.

I'm thinking that New York's Hot 97 will fare just as poorly under the PPM as Power 106. Regardless of the good performances of a couple of Hip Hop and R&B stations in major markets, I will still confidently assert that the era of hip hop hegemony in the popular culture as a whole is finished.

WQHT is #2 18-34 in NY. The Box is #1 12+ in Houston. Hip hop is definitely not dead.

I didn't say Hip Hop was "dead". What I did say though is that Hip Hop in 2008 only has a fraction of the influence that it commanded from the late 90's through the early 2000's. As for Hot 97, the numbers I saw for them derived from the PPM were significantly lower than from the diary methodology.
