Magic 98.3 complains of translator applications in NW NJ & Brooklyn

http://www.magic983.com/KeepMyMagic.aspx

"As a loyal Magic 98.3 listener, we want to contact you regarding possible interference with your ability to listen to Magic at home! An application for another radio signal on 98.3 is before the Federal Communications Commission for approval.

This new signal would interfere with your ability to listen to Magic 98.3!

Especially if you live in one of these Zip Codes:

Washington, NJ: 07882,08865,08802,08886,07823,07832,07825,07865,07863,07840

Brooklyn, NY: 11201,11205,11206,11221,11211,11222,10011,10016,
10010,10009,10003,10014,10012,10002,10013,10038,10004,10007,
10006,10282,10280,10281,10005,10305,10306,07002,07094,07047,
07093,07087,07086,07030,07307,07310,07306,07302,07304,07031,
07071,07070,07072,07073,07057,07075,07604,07644,07026,07666,
07074,07043,07050,07052,07079,07088,07051,07102-07112,07101,
07175,07184,07188,07199,07003,07006,07009,07012,07013,07021,
07028,07042,07043,07424,07512,07007,07015"

Is it even possible to pick up WMGQ in Brooklyn!? I'd think in NYC, 98.3 would be a mix of "K-Joy" and pirates.

You will see more of this with the LPFM station window and the approved translators on the way.

Magic comes in well in Staten Island and southern Brooklyn, when the pirates are off.
Thunder 106 shut down a translator in Manhattan.

Magic 98.3 should complain to CBS radio for 98.1 WOGL in HD, interfering with their reception in Mercer county. It used to be possible to hear it well in Trenton.

That is a very badly written message. Most of the zip codes after Brooklyn are in NJ or Manhattan, but not all zip codes in Brooklyn are included, and it appears the closest Brooklyn zips to WMGQ's tx are not included (e.g. Fort Hamilton 11209, Bay Ridge 11220, Dyker Heights 11228). The ones listed are downtown Brooklyn and north and east of there. It looks like all the zip codes listed are in the "fringe" area on the radio-locator map.

I have gotten 98.3 near (poorly) Fort Hamilton and (definitely OK in) Staten Island, which are not within the listed zip codes, and I don't know that it is audible at all in the NY zip codes listed, at least.

Would the proposed translator harm reception in SI?

Oh please, that station is garbage to begin with, no need for another 106.7 and 107.1 clone. Let those areas have their translators to serve different formats.

In Western Brooklyn (basically the ZIP's listed), WKJY wins 75% of the time. The only few places I recall where WMGQ was most present is around the Verrazano Bridge. Coney Island/Brighton Beach, WKJY is 50/50. From central and northern Brooklyn, forget about WMGQ. WKJY is 90% there, the other just static. Queens line, WKJY is 100%.

It looks like WMGQ's complaint worked: Capstar moved their Washington, NJ translator application from 98.3 to 98.7 MHz... now just wait for WEPN-FM to complain instead!

The basis of WMGQ's complaint was a tiny sliver of contour overlap in northern Somerset County, and their claim to have two listeners within the translator's 1 mV/m contour:

WDHA was doing the same thing for a 105.5 translator application in Alpine. The zip codes listed were for NE Bergen County and SE Rockland County but up there WDHA has signal issues with WDBY. However, I don't see the "Save WDHA's Signal" on their website any longer.

If Capstar was looking to translate WAEB from Allentown-I would question it. That station already puts a decent signal out in Warren County and I don't think they could justify the application. The proposed translator wouldn't put out much of a signal to be worthwhile- If I read it correctly, there are applying for a directional signal, apparently going nowhere.. the engineers need to go back and do their homework.
