Majic 95 plays Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." PPM kills the soft rock star.

Rarely do I have to check my radio to verfiy what station I'm hearing. But I did just that when I heard Lady Gaga on what I thought was Majic 95. It was Majic 95. I've read about soft rockers adjusting their formats to make them more PPM friendly. That tune was more of a jolt than an adjustment. But it got me to notice that Majic has given up trying to describe the music they play and talks about how the station makes you feel. Of course, that makes it harder on the listeners when they want to recommend it to a friend. They've got no quick answer when the friend asks, "What do they play?"

I turned off Majic the day the killed the Super Song's Of The 70's weekend. It wouldn't surprise me if KKMJ goes Top 40, yuk! I started to adjust to the faint signal of True Oldies Channel 92.5 until August of 2011 when they moved to 98.9 and all of a sudden I heard Buddy Holly, Donavan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Guess Who, Temptations, Alan O'Day, Elvis, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Steam, and Christopher Cross to name a few. 2010 was great I had Super Songs of the 70's starting Fridays at 3 pm until 7 pm (the radio would be off, or on 92.5 if I could catch it for the True Oldies Channel (They would have 60's weekend like they do right now) I would watch Kitchen Nightmares on Fox Friday at 7 pm, and record it until 8 pm. Then when midnight struck I would be back to listening to KKMJ til about 4 AM. Sleep go to work at 1 get off at 10:30 pm with my Walkman glued to my hear to Hypersonic Radio until 12 midnight, then the tuner slid back to 95.5 rinse and repeat, Sunday roll it at work at 1 until 9 filpped the dial to 92.5 if I could receive the signal, if not the TV was turned onto WGN Retro Night until 1 AM. Followed by lights out and go to work the next day.

The grim reaper always appears to be always touching my radio dial.

Jammin 105.9 killed (2009)
KKMJ Super Song's of the 70's killed (2011)
Hypersonic (As of Labor Day EXACTLY 1 year after the demise of Super Songs of the 70's) killed
KXBT soon to be killed (2012) They will probably do it when KKMJ plays Christmas tunes, for sure just to piss folks like me off!!!

Well, at least Jammin is back on 103.1, though not the same, for now.

The closer you get to age 55, willdav, the less you will find on the airwaves that you like. Advertisers don't covet 55+ listeners. Maybe the day will come when Arbitron doesn't even bother including them in the PPM sample?

I'm getting closer to that age myself and my awareness of why my tastes aren't being catered to locally is a big reason that my household now includes 4 Internet radios.

I'm well passed 55 and have to admit I do not need terrestrial radio any longer. If I'm home (which is most of the time) I either listen to my own music library or one of a handful of Internet stations playing Oldies/Classic Hits (KODS is my favorite - sounds just like a 60's station). If I'm in the car it's my flash player making good with the Oldies.

Local radio has forsaken me. I am paying it back.

Majic has been playing Lady Gaga for over a year. I know for a fact I played Bad Romance and Poker Face on the weekends.

I wonder if Elton John, Rod Stewart or for that matter U2 could get a start today on radio?

U2 would seem to fit right in with the dreck that passes for pop music today but what format would support a new Elton or Stewart?

Maybe some sort of classic hits / hot AC hybrid? Oh wait...

To me it's not surprising at all to hear Lady Gaga on Majic, and feel free to disagree but it seems to me that there are a couple of factors in play here. Primarily it would be her superstar status with her tremendous appeal to a wide age group (I'm not in the younger demo but love her music). Secondly I think there's a perception that over time a lot of songs tend to lose their harder edge simply because of continuing airplay and familiarity. Another case in point, just before lunch today I heard ZZ Tops "Legs" and it fit, quite well in my opinion.
