Major sports events shown on tape delay or pre-empted in certain areas

In the late 70's and early 80's, Birmingham's NBC affiliate WAPI-13 (now WVTM) didn't carry the Sunday NBC package of college basketball in order to carry a syndicated package of college basketball from the then-fledgling Sun Belt Conference, due to UAB's membership in the Sun Belt. Problem was, the Sun Belt was made up at the time of smaller schools, some who had only recently moved up to Division I and others like UAB who had just started their basketball programs. At the time, Birmingham had only two other commercial stations, so we were unable to get a lot of quality basketball games.

Also, WBRC-6 (ABC at the time) did not carry Pro Bowler's Tour for much of the 70's and 80's.

Recently on March 31, 2012. Our local Peacock station WYFF 4 pre-empted the first hour of Saturday's NBC Sports coverage of the 2012 Shell Houston Open for a live coverage of North Carolina Vietnam Veterans homecoming in Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC (despite NBC is more tollerent with affiliate pre-emptions).

During that same late '70s/early '80s period, Tampa-St Petersburg's NBC affiliate, WFLA-8, did the same thing as WAPI-13 in Birmingham, bumping NBC's regular season college basketball games to show the Sun Belt Conference, of which USF was also a member. In most cases, the bumped NBC telecasts weren't shown on other stations, except for a big game or two on then-independent WTOG-44.

Also, while then-ABC affiliate WTSP-10 did carry Pro Bowlers' Tour, they bumped, usually for syndicated fare, the taped, so-called "trash-sport" show Superstars, in which athletes competed in sports other than their specialties.

I can't imagine WLOS pulling such a stunt again; if they tried to, you know that ESPN would be on them(ABC carries a lot of Clemson games each year, so passing up the no.1 team in the country, to air syndicated programs and local news, would be bad publicity.) Maybe 13 needs to go back to having local news after college football; whoever made the decision to air syndicated shows and local news instead of ABC's games was likely fired.

What about Greenville/Spartanburg?

Also, I've read an old edition of The News and Courier (now The Post and Courier) from Charleston, South Carolina in early 1983 I think, and WCBD 2 (when it was ABC at the time until it became a Peacock affiliate on August 19, 1996) refused to air the ABC Sports' Bowling games, and they got a angry protest from fans of bowling as I read in the article. At the time WCBD changed ownerships from Columbia, SC based State Telecasting to it's current owners Media General that year I think.

WYFF aired the Ryder Cup that year, while WSPA aired ACC football (Navy-Duke)..

Recently, WLOS 13 pre-empted the ESPN on ABC college basketball games for local college basketball games and seen instead on WMYA 40 (MNT). When WMYA broadcast an ABC sporting event while WLOS pre-empts it for local stuff, let me tell you that ticks me off eventhough DirecTV or Dish and or AT&T U-Verse doesn't carry WMYA 40 in HD.

Off the subject, our local NBC station WYFF 4 pre-empted a repeat of Harry's Law for their Chronicle special earlier tonight at 8pm. I don't understand why they show it at 8pm instead of the off-network hours at 7pm and broadcast HL in the first place??? Just a hunch.

I've seen happen before where WLOS carries a local college basketball game, while WMYA carried a NASCAR Busch Series Race from ABC, but if the basketball game ended before the race ended, it would be simulcast on both stations. In 2000, the Winston Cup race from Atlanta aired on WMYA, but when the ACC game ended, it was on both WLOS and WMYA. Seems odd for them to simulcast the race on both stations.

For years, WGTU (ABC) used to pre-empt a weekend of NBA games for the 700 Club telethon. However, in its coverage area, the Pistons (local NBA team) are #5 or #6 among professional teams (the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Packers, and maybe the Cubs are more popular than the Pistons)
