"Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

WHY? These stations can't possibly be THIS content starved can they? Or, is the TV Guide channel doing it in a funny way? That must be it. "Hey, look everybody, we know this is a REAL news and entertainment tv station, but it's funny because it looks like you made it in your basement with your stoned friend,s who look like "deer in headlights" on air and can't read a teleprompter!" lol...I've actually just talked myself into watching it. I love a good train wreck.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

Yep, it should be a trainwerck. Oh, it comes on at 8pm, not 7.

I wonder if it will drive Lyndy towards heart attack #14 lol.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

Pretty funny actually, just as I had expected. Not sure it worth more than 6 or 7 shows though. But, if I'm the GM or owner, what the hell are you thinking? Why would you want to advertise with nothing but a bunch of boobs? You might as well over pay for radio advertising with CC Savannah! lol....I like Lyndy, nice guy. Too bad his head just exploded. I get all of the self deprecating, hey, we're just human too B.S. as to why they are doing it but, dear god. Just keep Beale on the radio! If I don't sleep good tonight on my tempur-pedic, I might get up and throw the kid outside and beat the wife and dog. OH MY EYES!!!!!!! I think I have a detached retinas! lol......But I love a good train wreck. Now, if someone would just bleed! Because if it bleeds it leads!

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

A few years ago I lived on St. simons watched Savannahnews. I was wondering why Lyndy left WSAV?

From what I saw on the show last night, WSAV chose not to re-up his contract. I'm sure he took a paycut to join WJCL, but I guess that beats not working at all (aside from WRHQ).

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

I cannot believe either the management or the staff thought this could possibly work to WJCL's advantage. Just getting a look at the condition of the plant and the equipment would be enough to discourage anyone from applying to work there. That is sad to me because I had visited the station on two occasions, years apart, and found it to be an excellent facility. Last night was like seeing someone I admire in an advanced state of decline.

Conversely, I would think long and hard about hiring any of the staff who were featured in last night's program: especially the young reporter whose live feed was marred by an error in the control room. She seemed more upset about not having a piece of video for her audition reel than she showed concern for anything else. I got the impression that she had quit WJCL mentally quite some time ago, but is still showing up and taking their money. One gets the feeling that a lot of that goes on there.

But I noticed something in the opening minutes of the program, which I will wait to discuss after I have had the chance to view three or four more episodes of the series. Besides I want to see if anyone else picks up on it.

Oh, BTW, did I understand correctly that WJCL is on the market again after being so recently sold? Seems stations are being bought to be resold more and more often these days. Buyers make no investment in the communities they are supposed to serve, and the communities in turn feel no obligation to invest their audience loyalty in the stations. WJCL is just an item on a corporate P&L; those reading it know nothing about Savannah and care even less. This shows in the WJCL news department as much as anywhere else.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

I was not aware that New Vision sold JCL or had it on the block again. Supposedly, they were going to look for land to build a new studio, which I presume would also mean new equipment. They could hang their hat on having a facility built specifically for digital, as no other Savannah station can claim that.

WJCL can also lay claim to fame as being the first (and still only I believe) Savannah station to broadcast in stereo (NTSC, not DTV, that is).

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

I probably didn't hear it correctly. Plans for a new studio would explain their reluctance to do a lot with the present plant. Could be that business conditions, interest rates and all the rest might be slowing them down on their new studios. It would make no sense to move all of the NTSC equipment to new digs when it will obsolesce (is that a word?) come February.

I knew WJCL was the first to go stereo, but I thought the others had as well. I've been threatening to run the audio outputs of my satellite to a stereo amp for quite some time. I may do it tonight to see if the other locals are in fact stereo.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

It's an eye-opening show, for certain. I've long agreed with the idea Sullivan put forth, that in order for any station to succeed, its anchor team must be retained, not changed every year or so. It's great to get an in-depth look behind the scenes at the station(s) but very sad to see the shoddy equipment and technology they have to work with.

So New Vision sold them again? Does anyone have any more info on this? I can't seem to find any confirmation of this online anywhere.

BTW, WJCL/FOX 28 is soon to have "a major presence" at Savannah Mall. I've no idea if this is a new control room or a new studio a la the Today show. I've noticed that the huge steel structure with the clock tower in Center Court is being taken down in Savannah Mall, with a wooden border and plastic lining around it and a sign that states "Pardon Our Dust While We Make Improvements To The Mall." I don't know if the two events are related or not.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

What kind of presence? Seems odd that a TV station would move to a mall, although there are at least two tv stations im aware of that do have mall studios. Plus, with Savannah Mall in a general state of decline, it just seems like an odd choice for real estate if they're in fact moving studios there.

All I know is the station(s) are supposed to have "a major presence" at Savannah Mall. What that entails I've no idea other than what I surmised in my earlier post. But I wholeheartedly agree - what'd be the point of doing this? If anything, it'd make more sense to do this at Oglethorpe Mall, where the foot and vehicle traffic supercedes Savannah Mall by a healthy margin. Unless Savannah Mall can right the ship, I don't know the thinking behind this.

And now if I may stray from the main point for just a moment...

The new owners (JSS Advisors, LLC, a division of Fremont Realty Capital), purchased the mall in May 2007. Their prospectus states that their mission statement is as follows...

http://www.fremontrealtycapital.com/investments/savannah_mall.html

"Our Savannah Mall investment is an opportunity to redevelop and reposition an enclosed regional shopping mall in Savannah, Georgia." Elsewhere on the site, they mention that they restore and renew businesses and establishments who've had waning sales in recent years to their former glory. Fremont is also, according to Savannah Morning News, putting in seating areas with Wi-Fi and flat screen televisions. They've already unveiled a new logo ( with new outdoor signage), they plan to add new handicapable access, they recently built a $250,000 soft play area for children, put in new foliage in the mall, and just finished a $1 million refurbishment of the roof. But again, all of this is moot if they're not actively and aggressively campaigning to bring in new tenants, which I hope begins to happen soon. We've had far too many former owners of that mall make big promises and fail to deliver. It's sad to walk around that mall and remember what once was - The Disney Store, 2 book stores, Blockbuster Music (remember that now nonexistent little endeavor?) - and now there's no real reason to wander around the mall as many tenants are Mom & Pop stores, though several chain stores still exist. I think Waldenbooks is one of the last original tenants from when the mall opened in July 1990. At the moment Target and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World seem to be the only thing keeping Savannah Mall afloat. I hope that changes, for the better, very soon.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

I think that anything they put in Savannah Mall will be a satellite studio at best. Unless they intend to renovate an entire upper floor to provide for the space necessary for a television operation. New Vision may see a long-term lease as preferable to purchasing property in Chatham County, and the mall's owners would certainly prefer a stable, long-term tenant to empty space which generates no revenue. But on the over-crowded, traffic-congested Southside? What could possibly be wrong with that plan? (He asks, snickering.)

Whatever they do about new facilities, I feel sorry for New Vision: As they pursue their plans, whatever those plans may be, they are going to run into that buzz-saw that is Savannah-Chatham politics. Between the politicos looking to have a hand in any- and everything that goes on, and the self-ordained do-gooders who oppose any change because it is change, getting anything done is a challenge. After all, some people consider fire ant mounds to be historically significant architecture .... New Visioin is in for one heck of a fight. I wonder if they have the stomach for it?

P.S. I hate the word "handicapable"! It's insulting. Call me disabled, even crippled. I'll even answer to "Gimp." I wish these PC *****s would find something useful to do. And DO NOT get me started on ADA either. That foolishness has cost me more jobs than I care to think about.

Thanks, I needed to do that.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

I don't understand the point of a satellite studio 3 miles away from their main studio. ???

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

Dunno either. Perhaps as a set for newscasts? I wonder if any of the current staff -- mostly beginners -- could handle the distraction of working essentially in a fishbowl in front of an audience, many of whom will be trying to, eh, disrupt their train of thought. I still like my idea of using empty space as a studio -- just not in the center court of the mall -- but the more I think about it, the idea of a satellite studio in the mall is pretty silly.

How about this, then. The station is going to install a huge television screen in the mall which will carry WJCL's programming for shoppers to see as they lounge in center court while taking a break from all of that shopping. Does this sound more likely?

Witchlover, I think you're on to something there.

And I agree with you totally: the one thing I hate about this city is its fear of change. As I often say, there are two warring factions in this city - people like myself who want to retain the historical legacy of Savannah but still move it forward into the 21st century and the others who want this city to remain hopelessly mired in the past. It seems like this city takes two decades to garner and/or achieve what other cities achieve in a mere five years or a decade.

Re: "Making News: Savannah Style" premiere's tomorrow night 7PM TV Guide channel

There's now a new sign in Savannah Mall stating "Caution (and excitement!) - Wi-Fi and High-Def TVs Being Installed". So it looks like the clock tower (which has now been halfway deconstructed) in Center Court will indeed give way to the aforementioned cushioned seating area with wi-fi and HDTVs.

I have a friend who is an architect in a firm which specializes in converting old, important structures to more modern uses while retaining as much of the historical nature as humanly possible. She says that Savannah is in danger of losing much history, architecturally speaking, simply because of the groups you mentioned, and that she has seen two important buildings lost because the regulations make saving them so expensive that doing so makes no business sense. She says that sometimes, developers start out with the best of intentions but simply become worn out by all of the hassles. These groups will prevent owners from utilizing therir property, but are not especially interested in purchasing the properties and saving the buildings themselves. Property owners simply wait out the resrictive period, demolish the building and sell the empty lot to recoup at least some of their investment.

So on last night's episode, we find that morning hottie Trish Hartman intentionally took a position in....Scranton PA?

Jeebus, I know she wanted to get back close to home, and options were limited, but that is one butt-ugly part of the country!

Someone should tell her to stay away from a guy named Michael Scott up there.....

Would someone please inform The Lady Chablis® -- and the Savannah media -- that his 15 minutes are up? Thank you.
