Mama From "Mama's Family" Is Not A Big Fan Of Ted Williams

Vicki Lawrence of "Mama's Family" fame decided to take a break from obscurity and offer a cmment on the newfound fame of Ted Williams, "the homeless guy with a golden voice." In fact, she likens him to reality TV star Kim Kardashian - but not in a good way:

“Mama gets a little carried away when she speaks, but it bothers me when people like Kim Kardashian and Ted Williams become celebrities for doing absolutely f–king nothing."

Ouch! I guess now would not be a good time to remind her of that now-defunct talk show of hers from the mid-90's...

...Lawrence has proven herself to be a jackass over the post-Burnett years, but in this instance, I can't find anything in what she (allegedly*) said to argue with...

*I recognise that (a) she's saying it in character -- Archie Bunker was not Carroll O'Connor playing himself, by any stretch of the imagination -- and (b) the sources here are Mediaite and AOL News.

The portrayal is hilarious, but if she is expressing a personal opinion (which she certainly has the right to do), then I would like to see her do it as herself. Maybe that IS the way that she looks now!

Does she even own the "mama" character? After all, that originated from a skit on the Carol Burnett show. Burnett as Eunice was, as I recall, the "star" of those sketches. "Mama" was merely a spinoff, albeit a clever one.

Don't remember Vicki Lawrence doing any talk shows during the '90s, but I remember her as being the "Richard Dawson" of the short-lived Match Game revival of the late '90s.

So what is new? This has been going on for years and years and years.

I love the way people describe Ryan Seacrest as just bland and inoffensive, yet that is the way Dick Clark was described years ago. How many others are "Bland and inoffensive"? John Davidson ring a bell? The list goes on.

The thing that makes this such a good story is the guy was down on his luck. If he was a rich millionaire with a golden voice, no one would care or they'd say "That figures"

The guy has a good voice, but so what? So do a lot of others. He has his story and he's got a second chance. Let's wish him well and be done with it.

He doesn't need the added pressure of everyone following him every step of the way, though it does make good press.

I agree with mama. I think the media have made much too much out of this........just
like they do everything else. And Kim Kardashian is about as entertaining as watching
snow melt. No, watching snow melt is more enjoyable.

@U-Jock: "In character" - you mean like Mr. Imus on the old WNNNNNNNNNNNBC? :D

@Mark: Can't help but notice you wrote "a rich millionaire with a golden voice," but mentioned Ryan Seacrest previously in the post...

@Gregg: How about yellow snow? ::)

...as The Right Rev. Dr. Billy Sol Hargis, Crazy Bob, Judge Hangin', Brother Love, that'd fit. By the time he got to Moby Worm, he was so drunk and coked that the distinction evaporated...

And I thought Paul Reubens insisting on being Pee-wee Herman on interview shows was stupid & pathetic. :)

Somewhere Paul ... er ... Pee-wee is LMAO. :D

As one of the tens of thousands of broadcasters out of work due to automation and media consolidation instead of due to becoming hooked on illegal drugs, I'm with Vicki on this one. There are thousands of people more deserving of the broadcasting job offers this guy has received.

I agree, George Lowe comes to mind.

He has a good voice, so good I'm surprised he hasn't taken over for Don LaFontaine by now. I'd hate for Mr. Offramp to cut the queue.

...where were you guys last Friday, when I was getting crap thrown at me for saying the same thing? ;D ...

Ms. Lawrence probably was never a fan of Bobby Doerr, either. :)

ixnay
(who saw Doerr introduced in a private skybox at Fenway while attending a Sox/O's game in 2006)

I think you guys missed the news...It came out that Ted had not been clean and was still drinking and causing trouble for local business in Columbus. He's headed to rehab, so I think he basically drank away his second chance.

Ted ticked off a lot of folks who have stayed clean and are out there struggling to find voice work.

Dr. Phil had him on earlier in the week grilling him, until, dammit, yes, I did it, I did it, I confess, the power of the 'stache made him confess EVERYTHING!!
