Mariah Carey Suffers Lip Sync Snafu on 'New Year's Rockin' Eve'

Mariah Carey's performance during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve With Ryan Seacrest went haywire when the vocal track malfunctioned and threw off the singer's lip syncing onstage.

The audio malfunction occurred while Carey was preparing to sing her hit "Emotions." Her three-song set also included the hit "We Belong Together" and "Auld Lang Syne."

“I’m trying to be a good sport here,” a visibly frustrated Carey said as she stopped singing and tried to find her place, explaining to the crowd that the vocal track was missing.

The singer had suffered from a tight and difficult rehearsal schedule earlier in the night was unable to hear through her in-ear monitor, according to a source.

Carey was set to headline the show at 11:30 p.m. just before the ball dropped in Times Square at midnight.

I can't understand why the director didn't cut to commercial in order to fix an obvious monitor problem. This was a production nightmare, and we saw it on live TV. The fact that they didn't fix it for the west coast reefed is inexcusable.

Remember that the show is put on by the Times Square Alliance made up of multiple media outlets.

While the Dick Clark production "owned" the Mariah Carey jewel position as the last act leading up to the ball drop, they did not produce the show themselves. Together, the Alliance members hired a production outfit.

I'd imagine that by the time the folks in the Dick Clark production area figured out how bad it was... and not knowing it would get worse... they likely thought that it would be fixed.

By the time the re-feed was done, the incident had been tweeted to the whole world, and they may have thought it was better to show the incident than to "censor" it. Heck, I sure wanted to see it. That's the only reason I watch Seacrest (man, he's got jowls now!) and I would have been on another channel otherwise watchin' Pitbull do it large.

I'm sure that's true and I'm sure there's wording in the artist contract absolving the production company for any liability from a live performance, especially given that she voluntarily skipped sound check.

However, I'd like to think that if Dick Clark was still alive, he would have done more to save the show. This looks bad for Mariah, but also for the show.

Should Mariah Carey's career be considered the final obituary for 2016? :D

I was trying to keep up with both NBC with Carson Daly and Mel B {great job for both of them) and ABC, but I mostly watched NBC. I just fast-forwarded through everything when the time came for the ball drop because I knew (and I was right) that ABC would do a better job of showing that. I knew something was strange about Mariah Carey but it wasn't until yesterday that I saw the headline in nearly every online newspaper. I never read anything but I did go back and watch everything I missed on ABC, minus the "music". I did see Mel B sing "All That Jazz" on NBC yesterday and that was my kind of music. I did stop to see what in the world happened with Mariah, but I couldn't really tell anything that bad had happened. She seemed to recover just fine, but then there was no applause, which was strange. It was obvious she somehow quit singing with her pre-recorded vocals.

ABC and NBC both had Guy Lombardo followed by Sinatra's "Theme from 'New York, New York'". Now THAT'S music.

The best broadcast has to be CNN. Allowing Anderson and Kathy to go off the rails is must see TV.

Just curious but how could they fix the performance for the west coast. Mariah walked off stage and they can't really recreate it in post. And cutting away to commercial would break the deal in the contract. Im sure it's as much about TV time as it is performance.

I'm curious as to why she couldn't just sing.

One of my Facebook friends had a photo of Kermit the Frog (I think I'm remembering that correctly) and the word "Carey-oke".

She is now in her late 40s. Maybe her voice doesn't have quite the range it did when she was a consistent hitmaker and she now requires studio "sweetening" when she records and not-quite-live audio when she performs.

Maybe she needs to adapt her material to how her voice is today. It happens to the best of them.
