Marie Osmond FAINTS on 'Dancing with the Stars'

While MARIE OSMOND was waiting for the judges to rate the samba she had just completed with JONATHAN ROBERTS, she collapsed on the ballroom floor. It happened during Monday's 10/22 live broadcast on ABC. http://www.etonline.com/news/2007/10/55054/index.html . You know that video is going to be on You Tube later tonight or tomorrow.

AP story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071023/ap_en_ce/people_osmond . My thoughts: What a scary moment on live TV. I have seen contestants faint on game shows but those shows are done on tape but when it happens on live TV, its much different. My mom said to me that Osmond pushed herself too hard. What do you guys think about what happened last night if you watched the show?

First let me say I did not watch the show, nor do I watch any shows of this type (just so you know where I'm coming from).

My feeling is these are all carefully orchestrated stunts designed to get all of America talking about it.

Much as I agree with you on this type of show, you are mistaken. It was not a stunt. ABC had to go to about 4 or 5 minutes of promos before being able to return live. It was just one of those rare live bloopers that don't get the chance to happen because there is so little live TV anymore.

While not a fan of Dancing with the Stars, it is far from the worst type of thing that could be on the air. Many people bemoan the lack of family-friendly entertainment--well, here it is. No cursing, no sexual activity, no drinking...just people dancing. It's benign, and that's part of the appeal. (Yes, some of the outfits can be a little spicy, but the nature of dance is that it can evoke sensuality--notice I'm not saying sexuality--and if something like DWTS sets you off, you may need to consider ditching the TV entirely.)

Dancing and Idol harken back to the variety shows of old, and provide at least something different than more "boy meets girl" sitcoms or derivative cop dramas.

I don't watch either, but respect that they have large followings for valid reasons.

Ditching the TV

I still watch sports events and there's usually pretty good stuff on The History and Discovery Channels, so I wouldn't ditch the TV entirely unless they do something like make all sports pay-per-view, which has been mentioned.
