Mark Ramsey - radio guru or movie critic?

I tell ya - this guy is just amazing. On his Hear2 blog, he's "head of one of the radio industry’s leading research companies."

On MovieJuice, he's "a writer and comic performer living in the shadow of Hollywood."

Is there no end to this man's blogging talent?

I wonder if he's branching out because (as David Eduardo suggested) the clients he lists on his Hear2 page are PAST clients.

Today, I'm the savior of HD Radio - they just have to hire me first. Tomorrow, I'm Roger Ebert's best friend.

I'm glad he mentioned the "comic performer" bit. I find much of his "insight" on HD Radio very funny!

MODERATOR. DOES THIS QUALIFY AS A PERSONAL ATTACK????

Just because your own abilities may have their limits is no reason to put down someone who is smart, successful and has multiple talents. Your envy appears to be showing.

Mark Ramsey doesn't post here. Not as Mark Ramsey anyway. People are "attacked" all over this site. There's a never-ending supply of threads just like this one all over the programming boards.

Why on Earth would I be envious of Mark Ramsey? I disagree with just about everything he says and I personally don't think he's very bright. Of course, I haven't read many of his movie reviews, so we may share some common ground there. :D

The short answer to your question is no. It is not a personal attack to offer this type of criticism of someone who essentially is a public figure.

Don't get me wrong... I like Mark's opinions on most things. And all consultants use past and present clients on their account lists... it is standard practice, as a lot of consulting is for a finite time, not for life.

I agree with about 60% of Marks stuff. He is incredibly bright, and what I like is that he questions everything, particularly conventional knowledge of the "we have always done it that way" variety. I disagree on his rather excessive criticism of HD, which distracts him from more important things. I also find he gets a little too much into marketing and branding for a product that is actually perceived as being more of a utility: free, and not having to meet a cost-benefit analysls.

But I do frequently take ideas and say, "how would Ramsey analyze this" as a way of forcing myself to think differently. Even today, on a postioning issue I was discussing with a programmer, I said, "think how Mark Ramsey would analyze this."

Good guy, worthy of reading always. And I don't say that about many.

WELL SAID! Ramsey comes with a bias. Like anyone else. If I could fault him, it's because he is biased AGAINST the mainstream. Occasionally without cause. Still he's VERY GOOD at a different perspective. My only thought would be that "Different is not necessarily ALWAYS better".

But...sometimes it is.

Apologies to VSA. Clearly I blesphomed your god. My bad. He's only a guy with an opinion in my church. Please forgive my intolorence. Believe as you will.

The guy just seems very transparent to me.

As I've said before, he doesn't strike me as anti-HD Radio, he's just against any HD station that doesn't hire him because he believes he has all the answers. He does not.

I call the guy an idiot for one of two reasons. Only he knows which.

He is using the faulty data presented so frequently here from Google Trends to paint an inaccurate picture of interest in HD Radio.

As a guy running a "research" company, he really should know better. If he doesn't, he's an idiot. There is no way the data he presents could indicate "interest" in HD Radio compared to competing technologies.

Or...

He is fully aware of the limitations of the data he presents, yet he chooses to use it anyway - hoping nobody in radio is smart enough to figure it out. If that's the case, he's an idiot for underestimating the intelligence of his potential clients. If I were going to hire a research company, I would expect them to provide me with accurate data - not spun data assembled to "prove" a pre-determined notion.

I really suspect it's the latter.

I probably agree with Ramsey about 75 percent of the time, give or take. There would be little reason to read what he has to say if complete agreement was a prerequisite. I could just stare into a mirror and talk if that was all I was looking for. Well stated, David.

If I agree with you about most things, maybe I could be your friend. If I agree with you about EVERYTHING, I am a moron, incapable of individual thought!

To be honest, the only Mark Ramsey I've read is the stuff 700 linked here.

It was such an obvious attempt at scare marketing I decided I didn't need to read anything else.
