Media Companies Are Ready to Sell. Does Anyone Want to Buy?

Owing to my position at the stations where I worked, I always got the "friends and family" discount at the local dealers and never had to suffer through the finance office. Then one day I was called in to help my daughter finance her first big automotive purchase at a dealer I'd never been to. I sat down in the finance office and right off the bat told the officer that I knew what was what. She was only a few days on the job, and immediately got really defensive. I said "look, I've been working with dealerships for 20 years and I know what the markups are. I know you've got a job to do, but that doesn't mean we can't negotiate. Let's see what we can do."

Knowledge is power.
But respectfully, consumers don't need to have an "in" with and ad exec at a radio station or a history of "working with dealerships for 20 years" The last time I bought a new vehicle, I walked in with 3 things: 1) I didn't NEED the new vehicle, but it would've been nice to have. My existing SUV was working just fine and if I needed to walk away from the deal and keep it, I would've. 2) A printout from KBB (Kelley Blue Book), detailing exactly what my existing vehicle was worth, and 3) A printout from another website that tells consumers what new cars, with the exact options they want, should cost in their city.

I went into the dealership, shook hands with the sales guy, told him which vehicle I was interested in and we test drove it while his service guy drove mine. We went back into his office where he asked how much I wanted my monthly payment to be. I told him that was BS, because if I wanted my monthly payment to be $150, he could spread that car loan out for as many years as he needed to, in order to meet that. I told him I wanted to see the cost of the new vehicle I was buying and how much they were giving me for my trade. That's it, bottom line. He "went to see his manager" and came back with a bottom line number which was way off. I pulled out my printouts. I said "Here's where you need to be on my trade-in, and here's where you need to be on the vehicle I test drove today. You get me there, I buy. If you can't, I walk and take my existing vehicle with me". He went to talk to his manager again. Amazingly, he came back, having chopped several thousand $$$$ from their initial offer and got me within about $150 of where I wanted to be. I shook his hand and signed the papers.

As you say, knowledge is power...And with the internet and maybe a few apps, EVERYONE has the ability to have that knowledge.

I have 5 new Panasonic VHS VCRs (and a bunch of used ones from thrift shops) - VHS on a CRT TV looks great!

I've got my PC -> VHS set up so all I have to do is move 1 HDMI cable and I can time shift max & Hulu content w/VHS.

Suggestions for 4 time zone based regional TV "control center" locations:
ET: New York, NY
CT: Chicago, IL
MT: Albin, WY
PT: Los Angeles, CA
Master Control could be at your house, Kirk!

On last thing about Albin WY - the town is named after my great uncle John Albin Anderson:

(at least office space probably wouldn't cost a lot in Albin)

So...any other predictions about how the USA OTA DTV system will be shut down (TV stations in rural areas become "translators" for TV stations in nearby large cities, possibly just one rural transmitter is maintained, transmitting the Big 4 + PBS in 16:9 480i stereo [no HDTV from the translators]), this method spreads across the USA until most (all) areas have just 1or 2 [ATSC 1.0] DTV transmitters (with no HDTV, 480i widescreen SDTV stereo only), then these transmitters begin to be shut off as streaming becomes ubiquitous in the USA (due to completion of the National Broadband system)?

What are you talking about?? There's been no proposal to shut down local DTV stations.

No OTA DTV shutdown proposal now, however, when the ad $ [and cable retransmission fees] begin to drop for OTA DTV, I think consolidation (i. e. TV stations from big cities will rebroadcast [some] of their content on the DTV transmitters covering smaller cities/rural areas, there won't be local Network affiliates in the smaller cities/rural areas) is what will happen prior to a mass shutdown of (ATSC 1.0) DTV broadcasts.

And don't you see, @Kelly A ? This is where Albin, Wyoming can fulfill its destiny, by virtue of its location, as a regional control center.

It's 1,141 miles from Los Angeles, 928 miles from Chicago, and 1,332 miles from Raccoon, Kentucky.

Kirk, you're making an assumption that doesn't exist, nor worth speculating on.
It's like asking what if all the air only in your home suddenly disappeared?
That scenario is easier to speculate on because that would mean your bizarre questions would stop.

Actually, the BBC and CBC think that streaming will take over...the whole "radio" and "TV" broadcasting/reception/specialized equipment concept will vanish, the (USA) National Broadband system will be (mostly) finished at some point and will almost certainly be used as a "radio" and "TV" replacement.

The real question is how will the (USA) "radio" and "TV" systems be shut down - piecemeal or kinda suddenly.
