Mercedes-Benz Offers HD Radio in '09 Models

Published in Radio Ink today... "Mercedes-Benz will be offering HD Radio as part of the newly designed entertainment system in several of its 2009 M-, R-, E, and GL-Class vehicles and G-Class SUVs."

I wonder if it will be automatically included in the higher-end with DVD video systems for their wagons or SUV's, any system for those models, or as a completely separate option? Any Mercedes dealers on this board able to comment?

My bet is if you buy the full-boat, (pardon the pun), in-vehicle entertainment system, then it will be included. Just as with BMW, a limited reach to be sure. Especially given the poor sales of SUV's lately.

And the bad press Mercedes-Benz has been getting lately. I was just at the gym reading Motor Trend while on the treadmill. There was a feature about the somewhat astonishing slide in quality-control with this pricey, prestige marque of late. This development amazes nobody more than me.

The slide just got a lot steeper, wait until they start getting the returns: This damn radio radio doesn't work and I paid a fortune for this car!

The instant an M-B driver loses the signal from an HD2 (which, let's remember, falls back to nothing), the car goes back to the dealer and the owner complains, "the radio is broken." Warranty work is a 100% LOSS to a dealer.

Since no repair would be needed, in this instance you are correct. However....

Warranty work is a 100% LOSS to a dealer.?

I think you'll find that isn't right...

A car dealer might be expected to fix or replace a broken car radio, but how does a car dealer fix the defective HD Radio system where the HD signal frequently disappears or annoyingly flips back and forth between analog and digital?
Including, or offering HD Radio as an option in new cars is a sure fire recipe for creating dissatisfied car buyers, a bad reputation, and never ending streams of service returns.

Warranty work is never PROFITABLE, that's for dang sure.
The only payoff might be the next time the customer is in the market for a new product.
I am 425 miles from home on a warranty call to add 2 delay timers in an interface circuit that that should have been done already.
This call will cost 2 days labor, one night in a hotel, per diem, rental car and round trip airfare.

At least this situation can be fixed. HD will always be iffy.

I know I'm right. I have a friend who is a new-car dealership owner, and he told me that dealers lose on every warranty repair or replacement. The reimbursements from the manufacturer don't even come close to covering the dealership's costs in such cases.

BTW: 100% of the time, not 100% of the money. Should have made that clear.
