NEWS/TALK takes time to set up----music is much simpler----stunting with music is even easier.
Stunt with country? ;)

No, that's too easy to do that because everyone expected that during a music stunt. But who says it's going to stunt. Maybe it's friday "boom" and there they are, the new FM news/talk station for NYC.

...I was listening to WRXP's "Anything Anything" show last night, and host Rich Russo explicitly mentioned that WRXP was coming to an end, and he expects his last show to be on either July 24th or 31st.

Sounds like his last show may have been last night...

Not even the 17th. Yikes.

According to AllAccess, "Rumors have it that MERLIN personnel are rebuilding news studios for the stations (WRXP, & WKQX Chicago) as we speak, and expect to have them ready at that time (7/15)."
And according to RadioInsight, "All signs indicate 101.1 in Chicago running a News oriented format using the WINS branding, while 101.9 in New York goes News/Talk."

Having news studios built on time is not the same as using them at the time the LMA goes into effect. Unless Merlin's new crew is practicing elsewhere (which is possible), I would hate to see them rush on air without an off the air shakedown cruise. Good radio takes time to gel and why I don't expect it to be perfect out of the gate, the NY market demands a certain level of quality and chemistry from the get go. The new WYNY has the advantage of real radio people running it, but one reason Air America failed is that it sounded too amateur for too long. If it is a news/talk format, stunt for a bit so team has time to get to know each other before going on the air.

I think everything is setup in deep secret. Maybe they using Merlin studio's and equipment for the new station and streaming audio facilitys.

I am not in the radio business, but the old cliche that "haste makes waste" applies in building a new radio station. When WCBS-FM returned in July 2007 it was a "work in progress" for at least few weeks. It is more difficult to build a news/talk station. My guess is that they will continue the current music on WRXP for a few weeks until the pieces are in place for the news/talk format. They could stunt by just playing music with no jocks. This would save money during the interim period.

Just my two cents on a hot summer evening.

Having orchestrated quick format flips in the past, this is nothing. The new ownership has been planning this for longer than we know. They hired people who know what they are doing. I wouldn't worry about whether or not they are ready.

And speaking of WRXP, there is only one rock station to have a clear winner is WAXQ's "Q-104.3". This would bring some of the listeners from the loss of WRXP. Up in the Hudson Valley listening area including Poughkeepsie, they got three of the great rock stations. You got WPDH which has been a rock station for 35 years, WDST which is "Radio Woodstock" and WBPM which is still a rock leaning "Classic Hits" station under Randy Turner (or Randy Turnip). These are the tops in the Hudson Valley area to listen to bring former WRXP listeners to tune in and check out these three stations. If you are going to miss WRXP this Friday, why not going up to Poughkeepsie and listen to these three stations. You got a choice, WPDH, WDST and WBPM. Make your pick. Or you might listen to "Q-104.3" to bring listeners from the loss of RXP. These are the one you're going to pick. Good luck!

Yeah, and when Pulse 87 died all the dance fans drove to Burlington County, NJ to listen to Z88.9.

Maybe Clear Channel could shut off the IBUZ on 104.3 so that Radio 104.5 could get some of the former RXP listeners in NJ.

Why bother. WPDH beats to death much of the same classic rock songs as Q-104.3. I like all genres of rock but listening to these stations is like listening to nails on a chalk board. It is painful to hear them destroy the genre.

As a fan of the alternative on RXP I will not be going to the Q but rather to streaming and more downloading to my Ipod to take with me in the car to replace NYC radio. If I get up state it will be alternative rock on WRRV that comes close to what RXP had instead of WPDH.

Remember: Randy's a guy that infamously stunted a radio station in Chicago under the "Hell" banner.

Anything's possible until they can actually "launch" WYNY.
