Meruelo Media Ends Nielsen Ratings for KLOS, KPWR, KLLI, and KDAY

They'll re-subscribe at some point. Major market station owners with multiple mainstream commercial FM signals always do.

They already did..

What's going to happen to Meruelo Media Group and their radio stations? 😟😟
They are very cost conscious now, but indications are that they are moderately profitable. In such case, nothing will happen.

Thread bump to note that Alex Meruelo just had a major setback on his plans to build a new arena in the Phoenix area for the currently inactive Arizona Coyotes. Much speculation that he will throw in the towel on that effort, and perhaps will use the money he cleared from the sale of the Coyotes hockey operation to purchase more media properties. Worth keeping an eye on this if you are in SoCal.

This is a crazy story.

Meruelo sold the team’s hockey assets to Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Jazz, in April, but retained the Coyotes name and trademark, with the intention of getting an expansion team back to Arizona. The NHL gave Meruelo a five-year deadline to construct an arena suitable for professional hockey in order to be granted an expansion team.

So he has to build an arena AND get an expansion team in five years.

Meruelo technically still owns the rights to the Coyotes franchise minus the actual team and related operations, which were sold to become the new Utah team. A radio analogy would be an owner selling all of their programming and broadcast staff but still holding onto a silent station license.

He is guaranteed by the NHL to get a team back if he can get the arena built before mid-2029, at which time the Coyotes would be restocked through an expansion draft, and he would pay the going rate for a new team. If that effort fails, the Coyotes franchise would be completely cancelled.

So what does he do with his money? Supposedly cleared $500M+ on the sale of the Coyotes hockey assets, once debt was dealt with.

Based on the financial difficulties his radio group has encountered this past year, I would doubt anything in broadcasting.

If he seriously has any intent on returning to sports, he should put it in the bank and get 5% interest.

The hockey transaction was actually smart. He pockets a bunch of cash now and has a 5-year option to build a new hockey franchise in Phoenix. Also, a win for SLC.

Within the past few weeks, it appears most of the newer titles KLOS had been playing were removed from rotation.

Station seems to have veered back to classic rock. Even 90s titles are being played rather sparingly.

What I see is a total of 12 currents, most of which get played once, and two get played twice.

What financial difficulties? The radio side is billing well if not astoundingly, and the TV has a lot of niche appeal to advertisers and sponsors.

Stations all over the world are voice tracking. I think they realized that live talent was not needed at most stations most of the time.

Klos has ruined middays. They use to have jonesey jukebox at noon and then when jonesey left marcis playground now they have nothing at noon 😢I have quit listening. Plus I don't like how they have gone more classic rock heavy.
