What happend to the days of local morning shows? They gone? Well, I have never listened to that show. How is it?

I have never heard Steve Harvey's nationally-syndicated morning radio show, but I do know this. It is currently one of the highest-rated and fastest-growing shows of its type in the U.S. They have a solid staff and crew, and they put on an extremely entertaining product in the morning.

If given the choice between a dull and poorly-executed local morning show and an exciting and well-done nationally-syndicated morning show I would obviously go with the latter.

I will show the same love for Steve Harvey as I do 99% of the other Morning Shows in South Florida. I will not be participating in becoming a listener. I am not a fan to any of the local morning drive shows, and most know my fondness for syndicated morning programs :-\

Stuart does not listen to local morning shows on the radio because he is way too busy sorting through hundreds thousands of hours of his own classic comedic material from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s from his vast 96-X, I-95, 96-X (again), and ultimately Y-100 libraries in a sincere effort to put together 'The Very Best Of Stuart Elliott - The Boy Wonder Collection'.

Hopefully it will be available on both CD and DVD by this Christmas ! ;D

I have difficulty "Showing Love", when the original rumor had Bo Griffin returning to mornings at 103.5.

I also have difficulty "Showing Love", when I was in Philly for the brief period they let the legendary "Carter & Sanborn" back on for mornings (locally), on WDAS-FM, and must admit, the show sounded very good, and was exactly what the market needed, a LOCAL show. Only to be replaced the week later with this satellite show.

First let me answer HurricaneIII's Q: I have a 5.2 mile trip to work from door to door at 6:30AM. In that time, I pop on 940am for the news & their morning show. If not them, it's Paul & Young Ron on Big 105.9. Once I get to the office, it's my XM2GO and 70's On 7 for the rest of the day. My 3rd choice is no radio at all. That's how much South Florida Morning Shows impress me <cough>. :-\

I agree with Stuart.

The only morning drive shows that I can think of that I don't consider
a waste of time are the syndicated Tom Joyner and conservative talker
Steve Kane.

The non-talk shows have too much BS (astrology, celebrity gossip,
last night's TV shows, what I'm doing this weekend) diluting the
music and news. Who cares?

OTOH, Kane is so intolerant and single minded that I can only
take him in small doses.

Some days I don't even turn on the radio 'til noon.

That's what CDs and web radio are for.

Local radio has really gone to hell.

I'm a listener in Tampa who is pissed. Olivia Fox had a great local morning show. She's witty, intelligent, and most of all articulate. Steve Harvey sounds as if he flunked out of middle school. Is this the best we can do? It has to be a cost saving measure since CC owns Premiere networks. The morning numbers in Tampa were good. If they had to replace the morning show, I just wish they could have found somebody who sounds functionally literate.

I just read in FMQB that "The Paul & Young Ron Show" (now entering its 17TH year) is losing their longtime producer Tommy Owen. He's moving to L.A. to become a producer for my hero / idol Rick Dees and his newly-revived morning show.

FMQB seems to suggest that Paul & Young Ron have been on WBGG for all of their 16 years, but that is obviously not correct since WBGG has only existed since 1994. We all know that they were on WZTA until just over two years ago since they replaced Howard Stern when Clear Channel pulled him off of most of their stations.

paul and young ron were together since 103 SHE...in 1986-87. i believe. then when she went belly up...they went to WZTA and replace ron and ron (those two other guys who had a [EDIT] morning show) this was of course back in the day when every station had a morning show...tanner in the morning..rick&suds..sonny and the y-morning zoo..etc

When you were at both incarnations of 96-X (and also I-95) during the '70s and '80s did either of those two stations have any wild and wacky morning shows on ? What were they like ? Were they heavily personality-driven, or were they more for the hit music at the time ?

Take me back to those crazy Miami mornings of yesteryear won't you ? :

Crazy? Well, I guess perception is how one looks at it. I worked with some funny, entertaining people who did mornings. as well as tuned in to others. But then again, what I saw as humor and entertaining, may not have been to another listener. Back then, 96X, I-95 and most of the other stations, AM & FM, had the "Standard" morning shows. By standard I mean 1) A Jock 2) A News/Sports/Weather person & 3) A Traffic person.

Y-100 on the other hand, set a higher bar for morning shows. You had Tanner, Footy, Jim Rehlie & Capt. Y. Tanner was the star, but everyone gave tons of imput into the show. With mosly everyone else, you had your morning guy as the star and he did the bulk of the load. The news person played a minor second fiddle, at times playing the foil of the jock. Alot of stations didn't get the luxary, at least till sometime in the 80's of having a whole "cast" of people involved.

The jock had to be someone special to pull off having a decent single person morning show back then. Mark Mosley of the second coming of 96X is a prime example of how great 1 could be. You also had people like the late Bwana Johnny (WFUN), the late Don Cox (did mornings at I-95), The Madam (I-95) as well lesser knowns. They all had to rely on being versatile, pretty much a 1 man show.

In todays morning show world, sometimes more is less. The more they have in the show, the less funny & entertaining it becomes. Trying to be funny and entertaining is not the same as naturally being that way :-\.

I know that you're no big fan of 'Elvis Duran & The Morning Zoo', (or basically anything on the radio nowadays - and I sincerely respect that viewpoint), but speaking on behalf of Your's Truly it's been a real long time since I laughed so hard on a regular basis while listening to Elvis and his large cast and crew. With all due respect to 'Kenny & Footy' the 'Zoo' is a breath of fresh air compared to the last few years of the former (LIVE & LOCAL) morning show on Y-100. It has exceeded all of my expectations in a new morning show (even if it's not so new to New York and New Jersey).

As you are probably aware, the morning zoo has been on for years now and it has gone through some changes, but overall, their reputation and longevity is solid.

I listen to it every morning and I rarely go through a morning without a giggle. This is at 6:30 and 7:00 in the morning when I'm half asleep too!
