Miami-Fort Lauderdale's Talk Radio vs the rest of the country

You know what's interesting? Look at nearly every major market and one of the top 5 stations (12+) is a news/talk station. But not so in Miami.

Take a look right here on Radio-info. http://www.radio-info.com/markets

New York has WABC #4
Los Angeles has KFI #4
Chicago has WBBM, WLS and WGN at #1, 3 & 4
San Francisco has KCBS (#1) and KGO (#3)
Houston and Dallas dont have a news or talk in the top 5
Atlanta has WSB #2
Philly has KYW #2
DC WTOP at #1
Boston's WBZ is #2

Why doesnt news/talk do well in Miami? WIOD is #14 12+ !!

West Palm Beach, which is still not on PPM, at least has WJNO at #6.

Any thoughts and speculation?

(Okay, I know, I dont figure in the Spanish News/Talkers -- I dont speak Spanish, so I dont really know which stations they are

Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach is not the typical market. National right-wing radio has not had nearly as much appeal here as it does nationwide. In fact, the market has a tradition of liberal talk that other markets do not have. For example, the most successful talk host in Miami history is the very liberal Neil Rogers. The very liberal Randi Rhodes is another market vet.

Maybe because we have the likes of Curtis, and Zaslow and Orlando and fake Stu Gotz on the air. A major market like Miami and this is the best that we can do. And you are wondering why the numbers are missing?

There's too much sportstalk.

My thoughts exactly and no one mentioned Steve Kane on "Light Bulb Radio" but then again, you can't even pick him up anywhere. I work in Dade County, live in Broward and he fades away in Miramar, thankfully.

Yeah Stu Gotz, ashamed of his real name? What's wrong with Jay Weiner? Better than that name but 790 likes "fakes".

KYW, WBBM, KYW, KCBS (and its FM) and WTOP are all news... not news/talk. Only the largest markets have the available cume to drive such a station. With half of the MSA being Hispanic and 70% of that being Spanish dominant, all news is not a big option in Miami. Too limited a cume base.

Another factor is the economics... While WGN is top 5 12+, it tends to hover around 20th in 25-54 outside baseball season.

While WIOD is a good signal, all the AM ones you mention are 50 kw operations (WTOP is FM), and all below 1100 on the dial... great facilities.

It makes you wonder if the Miami market could sustain an FM news/talk better than one on FM.

WAQI beats WIOD 12+, and WQBA and WSUA are behind WIOD by quite a bit in 12+. The only other significant Spanish language talker is WWFE.

WIOD today is nothing like the WIOD of 20 years ago. Outside of AM drive, its all syndicated. I was just thinking of this yesterday when I came across a youtube video of Neil Rogers circa 1991/92 doing his midday talk show as a remote to a packed live audience. In the video, the (then)PM drive host, Stan Major pays a visit. I believe at that time, Mike Reineri was still doing AM drive. What a host of talent! The only syndicated shows were nights and weekends.
During the mid to late 80's in that market, 3 major AM talkers were battling it out (WIOD, WINZ, WNWS) with little or no syndication.

I think an FM news/talk would work, but the question is, could it work without Rush, Beck and Hannity -- all the "big syndicated names." If the economy were better, I think Cox would try it on 93.1. Ratings are, at best, fair at the station (although costs are probably near zero). Clear Channel wouldnt do it because it would KILL WIOD if they moved Rush.
