Michael Savage: The REAL reason WPGB is trailing KDKA in the talk radio race.

WPGB, aka 'FM NewsTalk 104.7', is in its 5th year on the air, and it is very popular in this town, thanks to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Quinn and Rose and Pirates baseball. But as the Winter 2009 ratings state, KDKA NewsRadio 1020 has higher ratings than 'The Next Generation of News Talk.' Well, it looks like one of 'PGB's talkers, is acting like Carlos Zambrano...on his fellow hosts at 104.7. Here are a few excerpts:
MICHAEL SAVAGE: And yet here in America, I've had some people come to my aid. They see the bigger picture. They're not like [Bill] O'Reilly; they're not like Limbaugh, who's the biggest disappointment of all. Limbaugh has turned out to be the biggest phony of all of them, all of them. Amongst all of them, he is the biggest fraud. Rush Limbaugh is a fraud. When he was accused of the drug usage, I supported him. But that man is a one-way street. It's all about him. He's in it for nobody but himself.

And...
MICHAEL SAVAGE: Rush Limbaugh is the General Motors of Talk Radio, Wall Banger [Glenn Beck] is the Chrysler of Talk Radio and both of them have been propped up by TARP funds which is the Republican Party itself. If it was not for the TARP listenership of Republican Party boobs, Rush the General Motors of Talk Radio would have been out of business, Wall Banger... would have been out of business. I am the smallest one in the major leagues. I am the underdog and I will fight with everything in me against General Motors and the Chrysler of talk Radio and if they wanna start a war with me, well let's get it on my friends!

I think Michael Savage officially made 'Live and Local' KDKA #1 by slamming his fellow talkers on 104.7 FM. Dr. Savage, Michael Young and the staff and management of NewsRadio 1020 KDKA would like to thank you for ridiculing 104.7's fellow talkers. Fred Honsberger, Marty Griffin and Mike Pintek are smiling now thanks to your infighting, Michael.

If Savage wants to pick a fight with Hannity, Limbaugh and Beck, I got a great idea: How about them go at it during a Pirates home game, and let Quinn and Rose, Ellis Cannon, Rocco DiMaro and Lanny Frattare join in. And let it be broadcast over KDKA so they can see how far WPGB has gone thanks to Savage.

Savage is fun to listen, but his jabs at other talkers on 104.7 (as well as Bill O'Reilly on KDKA and Michael Medved on WPIT) are out of line. He needs to respect his peers or else I'll going to switch to Live & Local KDKA.
Michael Savage reminds me of Barry Bonds (when he was with the Pirates), and Beck, Rush and Hannity are
his teammates. I think Fred Honsberger and KDKA are laughing at WPGB now that Rush is on 104.7 and he's on the same station as 'shock-jock' Michael Savage. I wonder what the late Paul Harvey (whose 'Rest of the Story' spots aired during the Hannity show on 104.7) might be treated is Savage attacked him.
Hearing Savage call Glenn Beck 'the hemorroid with eyes', Rush Limbaugh 'Pillhead' and 'Hush Bimbo' and Sean Hannity 'Pawn Vanity' and 'the Wallbanger' is a reason why WPGB pre-empts his show (from 8 to 11) for Pirates baseball. What do you think?

The 8-11PM block has far too few listeners to tip the scales in the manner you described. Plus he's covered up by baseball over 100 nights per year. And they aren't choosing to cover up his views with the baseball game, THEY HAVE A CONTRACT TO CARRY THE GAMES. THEY PRE-EMPT RUSH FOR DAY GAMES.

I love to see that whole crew fighting. We have crazy Harold Hill, I mean Glenn Beck, Sean ( afraid to be waterboarded ) Hannity, Rush the bouncing boob, and the lesser of the Savage Brothers. You go girls!. At least Mancow is not hiding behind his words. I'll continue to get my news and viewpoints from the totally objective ED, Chris, Keith, and Rachel. :-*
 
If Limbaugh is the GM, and Beck is the Chrysler, who's the Ford? BTW; How many talkers has Savage never "savaged" [no pun intended]?
 
KDKA used to be classy operation, but that was 40 years ago. Imagine a radio world without the meaness.
 
And since when has it been a surprise that Savage has gone after competing talkers, many of them sharing affiliates with him?

Come on, folks. This is nothing. And talk show hosts - even "live and local" ones - snipe back and forth at each other on a regular basis.

KGO in San Francisco, a powerhouse that makes even KDKA look modest, is a perfect example. Before "Karel" got bounced for cursing into a live remote microphone, he openly fought weekly with the host who followed him on KGO (Dr. Bill Wattenberg). And that's just one example.

Here in Northeast Ohio, WTAM afternoon drive host Mike Trivisonno openly mocks two of the station's own weekend hosts as a comedy bit. Someone asked him about it just Monday, and he incredulously pointed out to the caller that such interplay actually helps cross-promote the shows.

Now that CC has a financial interest in The Randi Rhodes Show, they should just drop Savage, and replace with Randi. Give the station some diversity of opinion, and keep the $ instead of sharing with TRN. Put Randi on live after Rush, and carry Sean 6-9. Ditch the sports talk. This town has plenty of that.
 
CC stations have been dropping Savage, but replacing him with Mark Levin
 
Yes. That's a good idea. Put the second-most popular host in the country on tape-delay, can the third most popular, and get rid of the leading sports talk show host in town so we can build around Randi Rhodes.

Whom two networks tried to build around and failed.

Even if you thought for a second the syndicators WPGB has would allow this, why in the world would they make such a switch?

That's like McDonalds saying: Well, the Big Mac as been selling great for years, but NOW we have the McRib. So, to hell with the Big Mac...!

CC Owns The Randi Rhodes Show now. Why should it run someone's else's product? That's like McDOnald's selling Whoppers. And what's wrong with trying a new (for Pgh) product? As far as the sports show, I stand by my comment: Pgh has two full time sports stations. We don't need sports talk on yet another outlet.
 
But we do need one of the best sports shows in town, and on a station with lots of sports contracts.

In fact, we need it a lot more than we need Randi Rhodes.
 
The title of this thread is misleading because there are no ratings or rankings listed for Michael Savage. Unless numbers are presented the whole argument is nothing but a guess.
Besides, WPGB might be trailing KDKA 12+ but they are usually ahead 25-54. Also, in the history of FM talk WPGB is one of the most successful stations ever, especially compared to the "FREE FM" Hot Talk stations CBS tried and failed with.

THAT will never happen. Hannity's ratings are too good. Same with Ellis.

Two types of posts dribe me crazy on this board:

1) Those that don't like the music a station plays, so they suggest that the station would get beter ratings if they change formats to the music the poster likes, and

2) Posters who disagree with a host's politics and suggest the station should put someone on that they do agree with, because that show is "better" for no other reason than idealogy.

So WPGB can have the Pirates, and no other support for them except for the Bob Costas minute. Ellis provides quite the good lead in.
 
And Ellis is the highest rated sports show, even without being on a sports station. ("We don't need a station I'm not interested in...").
