Michael Savage: The REAL reason WPGB is trailing KDKA in the talk radio race.

And isn't the Costas Minute gone anyway, as his Premiere show folded a week or so ago? (By his choice, due to his ever-growing TV schedule...)

It doesn't matter if a market "needs" x-number of sports stations in the opinion of folks here, or a sports show on a talk station like WPGB.

It's an easy format to launch, and it sells well to men, even at the fringe of it. That's all. Anything that sells ANYTHING these days is good for the station.

Now that CC has a financial interest in The Randi Rhodes Show, they should just drop Savage, and replace with Randi. Give the station some diversity of opinion, and keep the $ instead of sharing with TRN. Put Randi on live after Rush, and carry Sean 6-9. Ditch the sports talk. This town has plenty of that.

THAT will never happen. Hannity's ratings are too good. Same with Ellis.

Two types of posts dribe me crazy on this board:

1) Those that don't like the music a station plays, so they suggest that the station would get beter ratings if they change formats to the music the poster likes, and

2) Posters who disagree with a host's politics and suggest the station should put someone on that they do agree with, because that show is "better" for no other reason than idealogy.

Hannity also leaves open a lot of commercial time. 19 minutes 20 seconds per hour, which is a LOT for any syndicated show with 6 minutes of net spots. Randi on the other hand only leaves open 15 min 10 sec, on top of 5 minutes of nets.

It's probably the same reason WPGB chooses to play a rerun of Quinn and Rose instead of the first Glenn Beck hour live. Even though Quinn and Rose are syndicated, they don't carry net ads, and leave roughly 24 minutes of local spots open, instead of the 17 min 10 sec that Beck allows.

If you're suggesting that they are keeping Hannity and his substantial ratings over a show that would be diametrically opposed to the rest of the day on the station, with no track record, simply because they can run more spots, I think you're missing the point.

True, Hannity's on a lot of higher-profile stations that would not carry syndication if they couldn't generate that revenue, but Rhodes syndicators realize, I think, that she is a fit for a different mix of stations.

And they carry a 4th hour of Quinn because the show originates from WPGB. Yes, it's syndicated, but as far as the Piitsburgh audience are concerned it's a local show.

It wasn't a "they would've carried Rhodes if not for..." type of statement. It does certainly help that his show opens up so much time to local stations.

It's still odd. There are AM talkers, in bigger markets, that do have the 3 hour non-syndicated local morning show, and go right into syndication at 9. Instead of paying Quinn for a fourth hour, or instead of playing a live show, they rerun the first hour. It's not exactly common.

He's local. He's been on in this market for 30 years. Of course it's not common.

Aside from that, they may not have the ability to feed the 4th hour to stations that want it without airing it.

Q&R affiliate WHLO/640 Akron used to run the fourth hour, but eventually dumped it to run Glenn Beck starting at 9. (The 9-noon slot is now occupied by local host Matt Patrick's show.)
