Microsoft Gets Cold Feet, Backs Out Of "Family Guy" Sponsorship

On the heels of announcing a partnership with Seth MacFarlane and his "Family Guy" program to promote the new Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft has dropped its exclusive sponsorship of the "Family Guy Presents Seth & Alex's (Borstein) Almost Live Comedy Show" which is scheduled to air Sunday, November 8.

The reason for this decision: "FOX made the mistake of letting Microsoft attend the special’s taping on Friday October 16 which included typical Family Guy type jokes that were more than Microsoft could handle..."

HA! Remember, it all started with "Y2K"!

Hopefully it will send the message to FOX that it's time to pull the plug on "Family Guy"! They should have buried it for good when they wisely canceled it the first time in 2002! Why did they bring it back? To rattle the cage of the Parents Television Council?

jcs, you're either joking or living under a rock somewhere. ::)

Family Guy is bigger now than ever before. They're already working on NEXT YEAR's episodes - even Rush Limbaugh is featured in an FG episode that's slated for fall 2010! Nobody is pulling the plug on this show anytime soon.

If anything, Microsoft's move will only stoke the rumor mills and add a few viewers to this special when it airs in a couple of weeks. This is a case of "good" publicity for Seth McFarlane and "bad" publicity for Microsoft, which plays right into those Apple ads that portray the MS system as stogy and inflexible. The producers of this show are nuts if they didn't at least place a call to Apple on this!

That's right. I understand why Apple pulled the sponsorship - they didn't want their new product associated with what some consider to be racist, sexist...hell, every kind of "...ist" humor. Though one could wonder what Microsoft is thinking...if you've seen the Windows 7 "puking" ad.

But you've got to wonder how clueless they were to consider Family Guy in the first place.

Using words McFarlane himself once said when Fox chose to run several new Family Guy episodes during the last WGA strike, without his final approval.....this is clearly a "colossal d--k move" by Microsoft.

I'm very much interested in seeing this final product....and if it's anything like Family Guy has gotten in the last few years since it's revival, it's going to be hilarious.

Two big reasons:

1. Adult Swim--AS began rerunning the show after Fox canned it (along with another Fox castaway "Futurama", now on Comedy Central). It took off like crazy and has been the main reason for the continued existence of AS. AS even took the initiative to broadcast "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" long after Fox said it would never air the episode. (The episode was later broadcast on Fox shortly before the show's revival.)
2. DVD Sales---the series was a bestseller on DVD...despite the fact AS was running the show consistently.

That was a fun show. I liked getting to see the woman who plays Lois. I have seen Seth McFarlane several times.

And the orchestra too! The show has such good music.

They tricked us into believing one of the two commercials was part of the show. They knew we understood the second time.

Skipped through the "live" special, couldn't really care less for it... I guess they got some movie sponsor to replace Microsoft as the special's sole sponsor, from what I could decipher when I skipped through on the DVR - big surprise... not. Ever notice how when "Family Guy" or most other Fox shows go to break, the very first commercial - 9 times out of 10 - is always for a movie?

Two movies. One was "Sherlock Holmes". The other was also an action movie but I had to leave the room. Commercial breaks are there for a reason!
