Mike Lange, longtime voice of the Pittsburgh Penguins, 76

I remember listening to Mike Lange and the Pittsburgh Penguins broadcasts on KDKA. He was fun to listen to and had his own style (Buy Sam a drink and his dog one too). We met him one time when we were in Pittsburgh on a Blackhawks road trip.

My favorite was "Scratch my back with a hacksaw!" What that had to do with scoring a goal remains a mystery, but the way he delivered it, and his other lines, was amazing.

Early on in my days in radio, I was a board op at a station that aired the Pens. Lange was always a treat to put on the air - his broadcasts radiated so much joy it was contagious. A man who loved what he did and made a living doing it, no doubt.

I also got to meet him a few times over the years and he was always incredibly kind.

No doubt a lot of his unique lines will be reverberating throughout Pittsburgh for decades to come...

I'm a San Jose Sharks fan and remember Mike Lange from when the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Sharks in the Stanley Cup final back in 2016. He was one of the greats in the business, that's for sure. May he rest in peace.

And he maintained that joy even as the Pens were slogging through some really horrible years in the 70's and 80's.
