Minnesota Twins move to KSTP Radio in 2007

The longtime relationship between the Minnesota Twins and WCCO radio will end this season, as the team's new home beginning next year will be KSTP-AM 1500. The long-rumored move was made official today (8/1) during Joe Soucheray's KSTP radio show. The details:

  • A 4-year deal (2007 thru 2010 seasons).
  • The Twins receive all in-game ad revenue, and KSTP will pay an escalating annual rights fee during the deal. The station, however, will control ad time during pre-game and post-game programming.
  • The Twins will expand the number of stations in the radio network to make up for the loss of signal strength from WCCO to KSTP.
  • There are no plans at the moment to alter the broadcast team (John Gordon, Dan Gladden, and Herb Carneal).

WCCO is owned by CBS Radio, which has said it will not bid for any sports rights it considers overexpensive. That's why CBS-owned stations have dropped pro sports in Baltimore (Ravens), Dallas (Cowboys), St. Louis (Cardinals baseball) and Washington DC (Redskins). It's also why CBS-owned KDKA in Pittsburgh may drop the Pirates after this season.

Coincidentally, the Twins almost left WCCO on two previous occasions but stayed with 8-3-0 at the last moment.
 
Is CBS in transition? is that why there seems to be so much chaos over their programming these days?
 
It'll be interesting to see how CCO does without baseball. I'm from Seattle where the heritage station there lost the Mariners a couple of years ago, and KIRO is dying a slow, painful death. The station with the Mariners, KOMO, is doing well.

Young people don't listen to AM radio, so the question becomes what will CCO do to attract, replace the baseball audience. KIRO screwed that up big time.

You might wish to read up on the Twins' demands on the new contract, before saying WCCO did the wrong thing.
 
PB, not saying they did make a mistake, only that it'll be interesting to watch how CCO positions itself without baseball AND what they do to diminish the impact of having the baseball cume fly away to another station. I'd bet CCO will do a better job than KIRO in Seattle.
 
Where is KSTP-AM located on the dial

Incase for those that don't know across the USA, KSTP is located on the dial at 1500 AM. The station is Licensed in Saint Paul. It has a 50 KW signal. back to the topic. Its kind of sad that CBS radio is dumping baseball on some of its O and O stations.

I see your "love" has made it further west. Your Philly posts are...memorable.

KSTP is 50kW, but nowhere near the signal of WCCO. It has to protect WTOP and the Detroit 1500. Come in fine west of the Cities, not poor east and south, at night.

Never Mind. 1500 AM in DC is now WTWP, WTOP moved to the FM band earlier this year

I must say this is a shock that WCCO will no longer carry the twins. It’s been a tradition in this region for over 40 years. I guess this is part of a changing landscape of MLB baseball games on radio and the age demo the teams wants to reach.

As I stated in reply #7 on this thread, go back and reread what happened. Look at the Twins' demands. The new deal didn't make economic sense.

WCCO has been the University of Minnesota flagship since the 1930s. That means WCCO has carried Golden Gopher sports for 75 years, maybe longer.

Read my post on page 1 of this thread. CBS is on a cost-cutting kick and dumping anything that will not make money for the company.
