minor league hockey on Cleveland radio

This topic was brought up on the Cleveland.com Barons forum so I thought I'd bring it here to see what y'all thought. The question was brought up that if minor league hockey returns to Cleveland, which station would broadcast their games?

For those of you that might not be familiar with the situation let me fill you in. Cleveland's current team (the Barons) are moving to Worchester, Mass. after this season. The current Cavs owner (Gilbert) is trying to bring in another team for next season or the 2007-08 season. The Barons don't have a radio deal at all this season. Last year WKNR only broadcasted the away games.

I said that WKNR is front runner. Salem sisters 1220 and 1420 might also be candidates. After that I don't see a real candidate. But, if CBS brings Free-FM here, or if 105.7 or 106.5 switch to an all sports WTAM jr., then they could be throw into the mix. As I stated on the Barons forum, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any of these changes.

So, which station would want minor league hockey? <P ID="signature">______________

are you serious?? minor league hockey has all the excitement of watching paint dry. why would any radio station pick up this when they could make a lot more money and serve the community interest by broadcasting high school sports???

I don't believe its a matter of which stations wants minor league hockey. Its a matter of if the team is willing to pay the station to be on the air. Let's think about this for a minute. The barons last year only had road games on the air, not home games, this year, nothing. I am sure wknr would have put the barons on if the barons were willing to pay for the air time. Remember minor league teams pay to be on the air and the barons did not want to spend the money at all. sure the games this season were on the internet, but you had to pay for that service. So the bottom line is if a new team comes to town , are they willing to pay for the air time. beacuse its only the browns, cavs and indians who get paid to be on the air.

no decision maker in radio is going to give a hoot about community interest any time soon.

If they can make money, they will do it.
My guess is that they make more from infomecials than high school sports.

If you have noticed stations in cleveland will only do hs sports if its brokered, its been quite some time since a station did all the leg work to put hs sports on. The old whk 1420 did in the mid 90's. you look at ignatius, st ed's heck even bw and cwru , those are basically brokered out.
