Misleading Johnny Carson Story on NBC Nightly News Tonight...

NBC rounded out their newscast tonight by running a misleading piece mentioning that "anyone can unearth hidden gems" of the Carson 'Tonight Show' era at www.johnnycarson.com now that all of the episodes are available to be viewed on the internet and available to a whole new generation.

Here's the story they ran tonight:

The truth is... the episodes are not readily available to the general public. One must sign up at https://licensing.johnnycarson.com/ and then wait for at least 48 hours for the Carson Entertainment Group to get back to you. That is, of course, if they decide you are worthy enough to have access to all the archived episodes of Johnny's 'Tonight'. I signed up, so we'll see what happens.

I'd like to thank NBC's "News" division for misleading the crap out of it's viewers tonight. I hope Comcast guts the place when they take over.

Yeah that was either a misleading news story or it was a real big mistake. I'm sure they'll mention it on tomorrow nights broadcast after they finish answering the phone. Yahoo News has a much more accurate story below. The bad news is that only media professionals will be allowed to search and access clips. The good news is that a version of the site is planned where eventually everyone will be allowed access.

Yes, the NBC story leaves out some important details...namely, you will likely pay fees for the rights to view these episodes. Deceiving at best, outright lie at worst. NBC continues to miscue. Good grief, someone put some people in there who know what they are doing.

If I'm not mistaken clips from the show have been available for many years to the public who were willing to pay. It was mostly for other televison productions that needed clips from the show. It would be nice if they would come up with some way of putting them on a site like Hulu or Youtube. if they insist on charging for them they could put the entire series on netflix. You could stream them on your wii system. that would be a lot of content. I believe they ran over 6000 episodes for the 30 years he was on. Of course most of the 60's episodes were erased because NBC didn't want to buy new blank tapes so they just taped over the old ones.

Nothing more than throwing ol' Johnny a bone. That's how I see it. Does it have room in journalism? Probably not.

One thing is for certain: You most likely won't see such a report on "NBC Nightly News" if Conan O'Brien sets up a similar arrangement of his old TV shows. :D
