An interesting development this morning, as I tuned into South 107, as I usually do via their online stream, and was perplexed to hear - not Moby, but a local morning show, being identified by the male host as "Ross, Monica and Mr. Moby." About 54 minutes in, I finally hear Moby - during an obviously pre-recorded exchange with the hosts about the Chilean miner rescue, which lasted all of 25 seconds, before moving on to a Brooks & Dunn record. Also, earlier in the program, Ross did promote that later in the show, we will hear "Moby's Soapbox," which is one of the many daily staples of Moby's regular morning show. So I take it that Moby will continue being on the South 107 morning show, albeit only in canned form. I guess I should have known something was up when, yesterday morning at around 6:20 AM, South 107 cut away before the network commercial break started to play a Montgomery Gentry song - likely to give away tickets to their show in Rome next week, as I heard a winner during a phoner on a subsequent break. (I should point out that on occasion, South 107 would play a song in lieu of commercials during a break - not sure if they were having trouble selling the syndicated Moby show...)
Anyway, as soon as I heard the unfamiliar voices on South 107 (which have been fielding local calls from listeners about who "the perfect man" should be), I popped up the Moby affiliate out of Monroe, LA on another player, where his original show is still on the air. Interestingly, the thirty-some-odd-seconds-long montage of movie and media clips ("wakey, wakey, eggs and bacey," "it's showtime," et al.) that Moby played today was also heard on South 107 at the very start of the show after the news. So I guess that element, along with the pre-recorded Moby cut-ins with Ross and Monica, make it feel as if Moby is still on the show. Give me a break. They're probably incorporating Moby's name into the show so as not to confuse listeners into thinking that two of the characters from "Friends" have a new radio show. Either have him live or don't include him on your new show altogether. In the big picture, it's a win for local radio, but not if you're a Moby fan.
And as I finish this post, I heard Ross once again remind listeners that they're listening to "Ross, Monica and Mr. Moby" immediately followed by a pre-recorded Moby saying, "Yeah, baby." No joke. This is worse than when the late Isaac Hayes, after years of doing a live and local morning show for New York's Kiss-FM, was forced to "babysit" the syndicated Doug Banks morning show. "The Doug Banks Morning Show with Isaac Hayes," was how the morning program was rebranded on Kiss-FM. If Isaac heard how the new South 107 morning show was being presented, he would probably turn over in his grave. Luckily, I don't believe there is WiFi in Heaven.
